Sent the ABS module to module masters for rebuild. They could not find anything wrong with it, other than a code 23 incorrect coding issue. Sent back, no charge for repairs. Stated to drive and see if it fixed itself. The speedo has worked intermittently, odometer the same, abs light still on along with the traction light on dash board. Took to mechanic and got the following codes from computer. Engine controller 12, transmission controller 12, 420 fault, 430 fault, and catalytic converter efficiency code. I know the 420, and 430 ore O2 sensor issues.
So question is, is there anything else that would be causing the speedo, odo, and ABS to not work? Everything I have read pointed to the ABS module. If a Com error, can I get current one reprogrammed, or do I need to replace old, and then reprogram new one from MM? Not really too concerned about ABS but really want Speedo/odo working again, would be nice to get it all fixed tho!

Must say Module Masters have been awesome trying to help out with this is well. HIGHLY RECOMEND THEM!!

You should get the codes read out of the DSC module, not out of the engine control module. Sounds like your mechanic missed this one too. It will tell you the complaint.
DO NOT GUESS. The car literally tells you what is wrong if you ask it.
Highly likely that your Rear **LEFT** [edit] wheel speed sensor is bad, as it's involved in speedometer reading.

Also, DSC/ABS codes in your car are read from the under the hood 20-pin port ONLY.

Yep, I too recall right rear ABS sensor being responsible for speed values. You should ohm out your sensors from the glove box connections.
He's in Minnesota so also a fair chance that the connector in the wheel well is rotten. Could they have put it in a worse spot?

Thanks, will stop by the mechanic tomorrow, see what we can figure out. Have replaced the Driver side rear sensor already, will look at the right side.
Where in the engine compartment is the 20 pin connector located, had my son take to mechanic, apparently they could not locate it couple days ago. Guy does not work on BMW very often....
Where in the engine compartment is the 20 pin connector?
Thanks for no help. I am more than capable of fixing it, just not going to spend 5K on a diagnostic tool. Appreciate it. And yes not going to a $100/hr bmw shop to tell me it is a $20 part that can be replaced in 20 minutes. I have already done the left side rear sensor, just want to know for sure what the issue is before I take things apart.
It was a simple question, just need a little direction.

+1.
The best damned BMW computer guy on these forums told you what you needed to do to diagnose the issue. You're unwilling to take it to a BMW pro, or someone who has a diagnostic computer that can talk to your ABS computer. Therefore, you can't fix it, because you can't diagnose it.
There's your simple answer to your simple question.

If you didn't replace your wheel speed sensor with a Siemens, it would do exactly what you are reporting. I can't tell you how many of these we see in the E38 forum, which run the same DSC module.
Definitely replace with Genuine BMW OE or Siemens OEM,
basically any sensor must be OE or at the very least OEM,
unless you enjoy chasing down electronic anomalies.
This may be one of them circumstances!

Sorry for the earlier rant, first BMW owned, it is my sons car. I have worked on many cars over the years but these BMW's are aggravating. I did replace the left rear sensor previously, but used one I got from Rock Auto, was not an OEM or Siemens.
Two quick questions, can a standard diagnostic computer, ,with a 20 pin adapter read the codes. Hooked up to three different computers and was unable to connect. Also the RIGHT rear wheel sensor is for the speedo and odo correct?
when you say a "standard diagnostic computer" what do you mean?
whatever you hook up to the car will likely need BMW specific software to function - and certainly with the 20 pin connector that would be the case.

If you or your son is good with windows computers, follow the instructions in this first post of my thread here http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh...xperimentation to make your own good diagnostics computer.
You would need the USB-OBD cable with the 20-pin adapter I have linked (or similar).
BMWs are not frustrating at all once you see how they approach things, especially these older ones. The electronics give you so much information to guide your repairs. No reason to be aggravated about it.

Again, only the engine control module and transmission control module are wired to the OBD port inside the car.
To reach ABS/DSC and all other modules you need to use the 20-pin adapter under the hood.
The Snap on should work, although it isn't a terribly good tool for BMW use.

I have uses several different models of the snap-on box/brick and with the correct adapter, they will talk to the ABS/DSC module.

listen to abel (328 power 04) - he absolutely knows what he is talking about. the link he provided is OUTSTANDING and will shave many hours off setting up your own machine.
as he points out - if you are connecting to the 16 pin OBD-II port on this car, you aren't going to get much except OBD-II codes. everything else is run through the 20 pin connector under the hood. If you have a diagnostic machine with BMW software, then it should be able to talk on the 20 pin connector (or the pac man as many call it).
agreed - bmw's seem very logical to me, but i don't work on many other cars so i'd probably say the same about other makes!
lots of great resources out there for an e39 5 series so don't get discouraged.

Thanks guys, is the speedo tied to the left or right rear wheel sensor, have seen info for both sides.
should be left (driver) rear that drives speedo.
there's also an amazing thread over on bimmerfest on troubleshooting this system for an e39 - suspect you may have already gone through all of their troubleshooting steps?

I always knew it as right rear... but if I am wrong, I would love to know, to correct my posts.

Drivers side rear for speedo. Cruise uses passenger side.
I'm not above sharing a link from another forum when it's as thorough as this one is.
