2011 BMW 550xi Drivetrain malfunction/ Valve body issue.

I had my car towed into the dealer last week after it would not go into gear and the error message came up as "Drivetrain malfunction." Of course, once it got there, everything was fine and it went right into gear. Since this was the second time that it has happened, I insisted that they look into it, or I was not going to be able to trust the car again.

The bad news came back as a Valve Body problem $5800.

What would have caused this? The car has had the "customer care package" done 11/15 and the maintenance is all current. It only has 44K miles and is stored every winter.
