Hello, I ve bought e36 and it s clicking from 5th cylinder I guess ? I thought it was lifter but now i am scared because the sound is loudest from oil pan. I am very stressed now that it s knocking bearing or something that bad. Can you please help ? Video

Thank you for any help
It sounds a lot like lifter tick, slow rate instead of fast.

I would be very happy that it would be lifter.. I started car today and for first 30s i swear it was not that noisy, then clicking like this again. I really can t sleep from this. Thank you for reply.

I just don t understand why is the noise coming from oil pan..
I don't hear anything that sounds like a bearing failure either.

Thank you guys, I have calmed down a bit. If itīs lifter, itīs safe to drive with ? I just hope that this engine will last some time.

And i just wonder if using 10w-60 helps ?
10W-60 is only for the M-cars, and you do not need it in that car.
If you want to run a heavier oil, then go with either a 0W-40 or a 5W-40. What I would suggest doing it taking off the valve cover and having a look to see how much sludge is built-up in that motor. A simple flush can clean out the lifter and the oil system to get rid of minor sludge, but if you have goops of it, well that's a different story.
As for driving it, lets see what under that valve cover first. Also make sure you get the gasket, and the profile gaskets to go with it. As an added bonus, get the rubber O-ring grommets that are on the bolts too.

Actually now is 10w-40 in, and it ticks. So I need something little bit heavier. I am definitely going to take the cover off, that sounds like a good idea. Thank you for reply.
5w-50 Maybe ? There is a lot of info about oils but somebody say this and somebody this.
EDIT : After a lot of searching I think I will give a try to Mobil1 5W-50.

What weights if oil does the owners manual say to put in the engine? A 50 weight is too thick. Yes, it may decrease lifter noise but it's too thick for the engine!
Heavier oil is not the cure all for noisy lifters.
There could be varnish accumulated from using poor quality oil or too long change intervals.
My advice is to perform several short interval (1000 miles)changes using high quality recommended weight oil, 5/30 or 15/40 to see if the noise abates.
I do not advise any "flushing" as these will let loose a lot a crap at once possibly overwhelming the filter or clogging a pick up. NOt to metion that any solvent makes a lousy lubricant so whatever anyone tells you it is not good for your engine.

I know that 50W is not recommended by BMW, but after a lot of mileage and engine wear, I think it could be ok ? My plans with this car is drifting, so It will be stressed a lot.
I am not going to do any flush, thank for your advice!
I have ordered 5-50W already, but now I am thinking of buying some 15/40 just for few hundreds miles, check the noise intensity, and then change it again and try different weight maybe ?
I just donīt wanna to kill the engine, still hoping that this tick is "just" a lifter.
The thing with oil is you have to know what both numbers mean. At first I ran the recommended 5W-30 in the 318is, and it loved to drink a quart every 2k or so. So I decided to go with the 0W-40 and that helped with the drinking problem as in I can go roughly 4k before it drinks a quart. The valve train noise is about the same between the two oils.
If you have noisy lifter, it is better to go with either a 0W or 5W to keep it quite, if you have a drinking problem, then going with a 40 or 50 will help with that. So the 5W-50 should help on an older engine to slow down the drinking and help clean out the motor too.

Actually I own the car for just a few days, but previous owner said it didnīt drink much. Thank you for advice !
Changed the oil today !
Heated up, quick spirited drive. After that i made video again.

It s alot quieter, don t you think ?
Anyone ?
You're still worried?
Sounds similar to original video, which wasn't that bad to begin with. Still sounds like mild valvetrain noise, which is fine. Drive the car. Use normal 0w-40 or 5w-40 in it.
