Wagons are the best IMO. You can facelift it pretty easily and it's a nice color combo. The tan interior actually looks really good with the dark green exterior.

I'm buying my 4th E39 530iA this time. 98k miles southern car and it's listed for 4,700 OBO. Most likely will get it for 4 because cash in hand talks
Current
1999 BMW M3/2/5 cosmos/black vaders
Past
2000 BMW M5, Jetblack
1995 BMW M3/2/5, Alpine white
1997 BMW 328/5, Boston green
2005 BMW 330/6 ZHP, Silbergrau
1999 BMW 540/6, Cashmere beige
2000 BMW 328/5, 144k miles sienna red (slicktop)
1995 BMW Dinan M3/2/5, Dakar yellow (I regret it)
2002 BMW 530iA sport, Jetblack
2001 BMW 530iA sport, cosmos
2002 BMW 530iA, sterlinggrau
Other than being a year older, that car is identical to my 2000 Oxford Green II wagon! I do like the sandbeige interior with the green, But I will be swapping out the chocolate dash and upper chocolate sections of the door panels to black as soon as I can get out to Brandon's to pick up the black dash and black panels I bought from him a while ago. Other things I have done are style 66 wheels, 540 front brakes, a sport steering wheel, 18 way comfort seats, oil and gas.... Ok, Also 3 out of the 4 window regulators, amazingly, the drivers window regulator is original, go figure...
Will be doing a custom sound system, Koni sport shocks with H&R springs, an E53 sunroof, and either the drive train out of my 530 sport, or a full M5 swap.... Hehe, yeah, eventually, it will get done. Op, if you are looking for a reliable commuter, go for it. Mine will be going on 200,000 miles this coming week, well, maybe two weeks, at 199,500, the M52 is just indestructible, I push it pretty hard on a daily basis, as I like the power of my 540, but it gets a steady 24 to 25mpg, on long highway trips I can get a little over 500 miles a tank. Lucky if I get 300 from the 540. The 530 does get better milaege than the 528, and more power to boot. But the wagon is a wagon, I say grab it, you'll thank me later.

Set the controls for the heart of the sun
Am I the only one that is immediately turned off by an auto transmission?

Ever drive in the Washington DC, Northern Virginia rush hour? I used to be all about manuals, now? Autos are great, I've got my motorcycles if I want to shift to my hearts delight.

Manual transmissions are nice, and 3 of my six bimmers are manual, but nothing beats getting in the car, and putting it in drive when you're facing a long stop and go commute.
That said, I love my 99 528iT. OP, go for it, you won't regret it. Side bonus, the rack and pinion steering in the 6 cylinder cars beats the recirculation ball in the 8 cylinder cars all to hell.

lies (maybe) muh M5 box. The E39 was designed to slush around the autobahn, nothing wrong with slushing and having fun.
Side note, mein dream car.

I agree about just popping it in drive and going, it is very convenient. I drive an auto F250 for work and i do prefer auto in a truck, especially when it comes to backing up trailers. I used to drive a 5spd F350 and backing trailers up with that thing was annoying. You pretty much just had to drop it in low range or you would just be feathering the clutch the entire time.
My comment about autos being a turn off was based more on "the ultimate driving machine" and cars like it.

FTFY.
Tho, to be fair, as Snotto says, its 'least bad' with the Green. Still I'd rather have something like caramel w/ the Green.
Tan interiors are god awful and look like crap the minute they start to get dirty and worn. There should be a stupidity tax on tan interiors, kinda like a gas guzzler tax but for bad taste.

We used to have the exact same problem in Audiland w/ the large chassis cars.
SO many of these cars were sold new w/ tan or gray interiors as they were really sold to families as luxo cars, and the harder-edged black interior is not what soccer moms and retiree housewives generally want to look at.
