Hello! First Post! Just bought an 84 E24

    Hi there,

The E24 has been a car I've lusted after since the late 70s and I had the opp yesterday of buying one from an estate sale in Edmonton. My brother picked it up and is sorting through the minor wear and tear items for me before I fly out there to drive it back to it's new home in Ottawa.

A few minor details that I wonder if someone could help me with:

    1) What oil are you all using? Probably to broad a question, so how about synth or not? Viscosity?

    2) The jack is in a jumble in the trunk. Can someone take a pic of their setup so he can get it straightened out? It's missing a couple of tools but I found a thread on here that details what should be in the box. I'll go on the hunt over the winter.

    3) The alternator is on an angle, so I'm guessing a tired bushing or busted bolt. He's going to take it off over the weekend and see what's up. Is NAPA a good place to find these parts?

    4) The rad is a little loose at the top and has obviously been leaning on a pulley. Can someone send me a picture of the brackets or clips holding the top of the rad?

All in all it seems like its in not bad shape. A little surface rust in a rear wheel well and a little at the bottom of the windshield. Everything works, AC blows cold, no dashlights, rubber is in good shape, brakes are good, interior is good too. 170k miles, 1300 bucks. It'll be a winter and rainy day car for a couple of years until I'm ready to properly restore.

    Thanks for the help!!

    Ed

    1) Use any good-quality 20w50 dino oil, or a 15w50 synth. Valvoline VR-1 or Mobil 1, and there are certainly others, too.

    2) http://bigcoupe.com/phpBB2/viewtopic...207045#p207045

    3) Some of the alternators have rubber bushings, which don't last very long. Don't buy replacement rubber, but these urethane/kevlar will last forver:

Or, buy an alternator from NAPA, which has solid mounts. Alternators rarely fail, but the voltage regulators end up with worn brushes, either ofwhich are easily replaced.

    4) I don't have any close-ups handy, but there is a bolt and rubber bushing on each side of the radiator:

Wow that's awesome! Thanks for the help. One more pic if you have time. The battery in this car is not tied down. Can I get a pic of a battery to see what I'm missing, please?

    all the best,

    Ed

This should still be available from BMW:

Post some pics what you get it delivered! You're going to love that car, I have no doubt. We love rescue stories! The price definitely seems right - gives you a lot of wiggle room for repairs & upgrades.

+1 to everything dcains posted above. BTW, isn't his car unbelievable? Looks better than the 6-ers I saw back in the 80s at our local dealer's showroom!

I'm not sure if my car is a little bit different than the others, but jack & chock stowage isn't the same as that other thread. Here's what it looks like:

There are also polyurethane alternator bushings available if you'd prefer the original soft-mount setup. I swapped in an E30 alternator from a 325e (M20B27) - it eliminates the rubber bushings with solid aluminum mounting arms but is otherwise identical. It even uses the same Bosch regulator & brush assembly. It's a direct drop-in swap. BTW, later M30B35 alternators (from the '90s 535i and 735i) will not work since the mounts are very different.

Take a good bit of time to check that rust out in the rear quarter. Most of the time it's just cosmetic damage, but the tinworm never sleeps. The E24 commonly rusts out under the window seals and the rear quarters down under the c-pillars. They also have a tendency to corrode the front inner wing "trumpets" and the front fenders, among other places. In my experience the later cars are a lot better at rust resistance.

One more thing about the battery mount: sometimes the little speed nut falls out, in which case you'll have nothing to bolt the clamp to.
