So I've been looking around for a nice used e46 M3 to snatch up....and I ran into this beauty. This has got to be the most ratty looking M3 I've ever seen....the entire thing has been sprayed in plastidip, and apparently the hood latch mechanism doesn't work...so the guy used a rope to keep the hood shut! He sent me a picture of the engine compartment, and the fan shroud and a bunch of other plastic pieces are gone and missing. It's obviously had some pretty good front end damage at one point....and from the looks of it, it was definitely not repaired right.
The rear tail lights, emblems...everything has been sprayed with plastidip. Who knows what the interior looks like, or what kind of shape the motor is in. I'm sure the kid took really good care of it.
Why would someone ever do this to an M3? Anyone else ever seen some rat'd out M3's? Makes me sick.....
Oh, and he wants $10,000 for it.....

Stupid question......if I was looking for a "project car", and I could pick that thing up for $5000......would it be worth it if it's got a clear title?
But none of that applies, so...

Actually.....as crazy as it sounds, I told the guy that it wasn't worth anything close to what he's asking....and shot him an offer of $5000....and he said ok. He said title is clear, but I haven't called the dmv to check or done a carfax. Not sure I want to mess with such a basket case.....but if I could get it for $5000....that leaves a bunch of money on the table for repairs and mods/paint/body work.
Just thinking out loud.....
Most M-3's that are sub 10k will be salvage title or just plan ole clapped out cars. I understand that you are looking for a project car, but the question remains is what do you want to work on? Find one with a bad SMG transmission, or a salvage title if you want to turn it into a track-rat.
I am pushing 95.5k miles and I still wouldn't let mine go for less than 20k as I keep it in tip-top shape and only drive it in the summer time.

Yeah I agree. The kid sounds kind of shady anyways.....don't really trust anything he says about the car to tell you the truth. He says the title is clean, but from the look of the pictures he sent me.....its had some pretty good front end damage. And the fact that he went from 10k to 5k in price without even haggling pegs my "something's fishy here" meter. Who knows....might be stolen. Plastidipping would be a quick way to change the color if you wanted to try to get rid of a stolen car.
Craigslist is full of shady deals and shady people. On to the next (and nicer) M3 I can find.
For the record I have/had a plasti dippped car. Almost the same color. Liked it and it was cost effective. Would you plasti dip over the vin plate? Rhetorical.
