Fellas,
Been fortunate enough that my mother has let me use her 2011 328i Xdrive for the past year, that being said, been seriously considering purchasing my
own BMW in the next month or so.
Test drove a 2014 535i Xdrive and a 2014 550i Xdrive two days ago but was hoping some of the more well-versed/experienced members here had some
valuable insight and/or advice into either of the vehicles (ie. reliability & better overall power-train)
I know the inline 6 is BMW's bread and butter, and I thought the 535i was more than solid.
That being said, the twin turbo V8 was a monster and I obviously loved it too.
Would appreciate any wisdom you may have!
Regards,
Hello and welcome to the forum! In order for us to give you a fair assessment, we need some more details. How many miles were on the cars? Price? From what I've heard and read, the 535i is more reliable, especially when getting into the higher mileage cars. Before considering either, a full PPI report should be done. This will tell you exactly what condition the cars are in.

Do either of the cars have a warranty? The 550 will be more expensive to maintain for sure.

Yes both cars would have about a year left on the BMW manufacture's warranty and also a two year warranty from the dealership.
The 2014 535i Xdrive has about 31k while the 2014 500i Xdrive has about 45-51k (Been looking at a couple different cars)
I know the 2011-2013 twin turbo V8's had some issues, so that is why I was looking at 2014 and beyond (didn't know if these ones became reliable after further upgrading and improvement)
I didn't even think about that. Yes, the N63T does seem to be more reliable than the older N63. But it will still cost more than the N55 engine. For example, the high pressure fuel pumps on the N63T are something like a thousand bucks. And there is two of them. I have replaced plenty. And the N63T still uses a lot of the same parts as the N63.
Not trying to dissuade you. They are amazing cars with more power than what should be legal. There's always the option of extending the BMW warranty if you can, or an aftermarket warranty.
