Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii !
Here's a weird one.....
Started up the wifes car and heard a loud BANG...but the car continued running no problem for a sec or two....then battery warning light came on. I figured it wasn't good so I popped the hood and sure enough the serp belt had popped off. No biggie, I'll just work it back on and away we'll go. NOPE !
Laying in the bottom of the engine tray was the idler pulley. It had snapped off the front of the block !
Here's the kicker..... I proceeded to un-thread the remaining section of the sheared off bolt out of the block fitting...with my fingernail ! (LUCKY RIGHT !)
So, to my points:
A. Heads up out there !
B. I bought a new pulley (comes with bolt) and installed it. Should there be any threadlock on that bolt? Certainly wasn't from the factory.....
Any similar stories to mine out there? (I checked the search but nothing....)
Mahalo for your time and have a great day!

BMW issued a recall about the exact problem you experienced. Not sure if ALL diesels were affected, or just some. But yeah, I've seen it happen a few times. You were very lucky to be able to just unscrew the broken bolt.
