I recently had a friend offer us her X5 below wholesale and I could not resist. My question is I have done virtually no research on what options are on it, what to look out for, what's good and what's bad. Its the twin turbo, but I don't even know if it sequential. I do know it has the 8 spd auto but I don't think it is anything remotely close to a Sport model. 19" wheels? With RFTs? Surely I can smooth out the ride a bit with some softer side walls. My wife is the driver and she has fused vertebra in her neck from a previous accident (which paid for this car) and I am trying to soften the ride for her.
Any pointers on what to look for and where to find specs regarding the drivetrain would be greatly appreciated. Comments on how to reprogram the slow response out of the throttle pedal would be of particular interest. I am a long time E39er, so not a complete newbie.
TIA
Geoff

X5 ??...what model nomenclature is this new to you vehicle? It would be like going to the 5 series forum and saying...tell me about this 2001 5 series... it has a 5 speed transmission. You can see that adding the proceeding nomenclature after the "5" (ie 525i/iT/530i/540i/iT/etc) goes along way in being able to give correct advice, suggestions, recommendations, etc. due to their being multiple engines for a series platform.
Hopefully someone will chime in that has the engine "N_ _" nomenclatures memorized. I have to go to Wikipedia to keep up with which ones have twin turbos and which ones have a single turbo with dual scrolls (???...see I'm already confused ).
Remember to give the suffix when referring to your X5...an LCI (life cycle impulse...aka "facelift") 2011 X5 for the US market can be a:
- X5 35dX (6spd tranny)
- X5 35iX (8 spd tranny)
- X5 50iX (8 spd tranny)
The nomenclature for the USA pre LCI X5s are:
- X5 3.0si
- X5 3.5d
- X5 4.8
- X5 M

If you buy new tires the non run flats improve the ride significantly. I have Pirelli Scorpion Verdes and they think it rides just fine. Wife's mini van is softer but mine is quieter.
My biggest complaint is getting in / out of the car. Mine has running boards. I have a 5 way fusion in my back so different then a neck. Might want to have her try that out a few times.
Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like the non-RFTs are the way to go.
