    Thumbs up Project 325 - e36 track car build part 2 - HPDE/TT/???

So this car started as a stock 1994 BMW 325is with almost 200k on it. I converted it to a full time autocross car a couple years ago and more recently (mid 2016) converted it to a track car.

First build thread was here : https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...ss-and-HPDE-TT

Putting this thread together to sort of document the next phase of the project and what I have planned.

Recently upgraded brakes and rotors, which was much needed as the autox setup didn't last on track. Have a lot of plans for the car while working to get my NASA TT license done.

    Future plans:

    • Finish safety gear
      • Swap Sparco EVO seat from BRZ to e36 (replacing Sparco Sprint)
      • Purchase HANS device and new helmet
      • Setup safety gear

    • Upgrade to ZHP steering rack
    • Replace steering wheel with race wheel
    • Brake cooling ducts
    • Replace the dented hood and nose panel
    • More weight savings, finish wiring deletes
    • LS swap!

The brake pads & rotors I upgraded to are below, including a video.

    The parts I got:
    Hawk DTC60 brake pads
    Stoptech Powerslot rotors

Curious to see how you like the DTC-60, I went with the DTC-70 and they're great on track. Post some pics

First impression of the DTC60's is good. No issues with them at Pueblo Motorsports Park the past weekend. Brought the car to a slow much quicker and easier than the old setup.

Started ripping out the rest of the interior when I got home. Have a lot of wiring to clean up. I forgot I have motor & trans mounts to install still as well.

IG video of the interior garbage and a few photos from PMP.

Had my second HPDE in the car last weekend with a couple close calls. Front brake piston locked up and got a punctured tire on my last session, that resulted in a nice drift and nearly off track excursion.

Well finding this car again motivated me to get in gear this winter as well. I did a few autocross events this year with my 323is and I'm taking that leap off the cliff. Already found a used exhaust setup to run, z3 steering rack, and currently looking for a 3.15 lsd to rebuild and install hopefully before first snowfall. Gotta figure out wheels/tires next year.

Awesome! A new steering rack is on my list as well.

I think you should wait until nasa tt5 rules come out. You plan on time trialing next year and the 325 should fit in that class pretty good. Adding more power with a v8 will put you up in higher classes. Then you’ll be competing against very high dollar builds with huge aero, brakes, tires etc... Plus a v8 will find all the weak points in your drivetrain.

TT5 should be a good field that doesn’t cost a ton to be competitive. Working on the driver mod plus adding Hoosiers should net you some quick lap times. Sounds like you have some good ideas for optimizinng the car (mcs) A diff with better gearing will help you utilize the power you have.

Anyway thats my my opinion for the car. Looking forward to seeing what you decide. Hope it’s not to sell it lol

That's not a bad idea, waiting for the TT5 rules to come out. I realize that if I swap a V8, I will be really putting myself in an noncompetitive situation.

I don't think the car is going anywhere. But, I do want to make some changes to make the car quicker and better looking I kind of don't want to build to a specific set of rules, because then I might not be able to do something I want to do. I will have to look into the NASA rules, I'm honestly not too familiar with them and then I can see what I want to do.

For now, I have some brake calipers to rebuild, engine/trans mounts to install and a few other odds and ends to finish up.

Latest upgrades to the car include Revshift motor mounts and Rogue Engineering transmission mounts. I also talk about what I have planned for the car

Race season is almost here. Got myself setup with new safety gear this year and getting my car back from the shop this week after a bunch of upgrades. Going to be a good year!

Did a lot of upgrades over the winter. Finally got a video up about it.

Basically, M3 front brakes, spindles, hubs, bearings, new lower control arms, Z3 steering rack, new steering linkage, Sparco wheel, M3 front bumper, Hard motorsports brake duct kit, and a few others. Car feels hugely different on the track now, the M3 front end upgrades and Z3 rack made a big difference.

Have not updated this post in, well a long time I did end up going the TT5 route and I will say the car has changed just a little bit Many 2nd places in NASA TT5 behind the 2018 National Champ (one of our local guys) and managed to win both days at UMC a couple months ago!
