So I wrote to BMW of USA to find how many of these were produced in the color Gray Green Metallic (442) of my 2002 X5 and their response.

I can get production numbers by color for my Corvette right off the internet why not BMW? Why is it so secret?
So, many years down the road no BMW owners will know how rare a production color is on their vehicle.
The search for info continues.
For more desirable BMW's people have decoded the entire series of VIN's to determine production numbers. Thats your only real option afaik
