    Air Condition Update - 1982 e21

I'm in the process of TRYING to get my AC operating. I thought of trying to rebuild my Mini York Brick, then after doing some research I decided against it.

    I am buying a Sanden 508 compressor.

I tried to use the old bracket that mounts to the engine which held the York. But it requires that I attach another bracket to it to hold the Sanden...I don't like that option.

I have located a Clardy A/C bracket that allows me to bolt it directly to the block and the Sanden attaches directly to it.

I am replacing all the hoses, dryer, condenser (maybe...got do more research).

I'll post pictures as I proceed.

Please let me know if you have any experience or comments with this installation.

    Thanks

It's all going to be custom stuff. Hopefully you have a shop around you that can make the hoses. Be careful with the copper lines and fittings. They can and will bend really easily. A good set of open end wrenches and a hammer to shock the connections loose by tapping the wrenches worked for me. Adjustable wrenches, channel locks, and vice grips WILL bend, strip or break the lines.

You may want to put the low side service port in the middle of the low side hose to improve access with something like these. There are some availible with r12 ports which I am using as I like those more than the r134a quick disconnect adaptors. I don't know if these are the correct sizes, but it should help you find what you need. http://www.ebay.com/itm/331532510106 http://www.ebay.com/itm/311102807124

I uses a Four Seasons 33276 receiver drier as was the original part and it moved the high side port to a convenient location. The receiver drier should be replaced if the system is left open for more than 24 hours. https://www.amazon.com/dp/product/B000DCNEKS/

Replace as many O rings as you can and replace the receiver drier.

A flat tube cross flow condenser would improve performance if you want to figure out how to make a universal one work. The original round tube serpentine flow ones are not as efficient.

Removing the evap box, cleaning it, and replacing the foam tape is a good idea if you are brave enough to dig the whole box out of the dash.

Is there a more off the shelf solution to replacing the York compressor with a newer, more efficient unit, or is this it?

This is the best solution to replacing the york. I went with a e30 318i compressor because it was really cheap, but will probably convert to a sanden when and if my current compressor dies. I found this guy on a 2002 forum who makes a reproduction clardy bracket which allows you ot mount a sanden compressor to the M10 engine. They are around $100 and his email is dave.hobiedave@gmail.com . I haven't purchased any brackets from him, but others have.

    Relevant info.

The pictures in the first post are showing Hobie Dave's bracket. I used his before, and they fit really well. SilverPuddle, where did you find it, since Dave was out of brackets for a while???

Curious if the Sanden compressor mentioned in the thread is best option for HobieDave bracket. Thank you!

I got the bracket from Hobie Dave but it doesn't seem to line up with Sanden 508 we got.
