Hello,
Recently bought a 2004 645Ci at auction... it had upper engine noise and some misfiring...took care of that with upper engine clean, oil change, and new spark plugs (looked like low grade oil and 89 fuel had been used...bought from sherrifs dept)
So anyways, the issue I need help diagnosing is what remained -- a 'chugging' noise, most noticeable at idle and initial acceleration; hardly noticeable over 1500 RPM.
I posted two video on YouTube for your consideration:
video 1 is about 18 seconds: https://youtu.be/6nAVQTIvT7Y
video 2 is about 80 seconds long, and is of engine running at idle then accelerated to 1500 rpm, then idle with a/c on then off: https://youtu.be/bSnzieHReqw
I removed the fan belt to test if one of the external components...no change (I did not remove the compressor belt).
Any thoughts or insight to what this might be would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Sounds like a collapsed lifter...
by watching a video it's tough to tell wether it's top end or bottom end
One more thought for the lower front end is the chain tensioner. Add that to your list...Mine is more towards the back on bank 2. I have replaced all the injectors on engine and 8 lifters on 7 and 8....rear two pistons. Next is the vacuum pump....don't really understand how that works but its another common failure for these engines. good luck

By the way, there is a way to puff-up a collapsed lifter which has been a problem since the introduction of the M60 V8 engine:

Thanks ugeeks,
Haven’t had time if late to work on the 645, I’ll probably get back to her next month.
Will post my success (or failure).
cheers
Hello Timm,
Thanks for the information and links! I enjoyed the articles - your site is great!
Am I understanding correctly, if the vacuum pump is the issue I will likely see leakage of oil around the pump housing?
thanks again, appreciate everyone’s help.
cheers
Thanks! No, the oil leak is an additional 'feature' of the vacuum pump apart from the noise it can make.

It isn't the pump that makes the noise - it transmits the noise down the camshaft - try removing the blanking cap as seen below when the engine is running, if that makes no difference your vacuum pump worries are over!
