I killed it on the ring!

Went back to the Nurburgring again last week. Went five years ago when a friend did Euro Delivery on an e90 m3. I said if we ever go back, I'm going to get a steering wheel for my computer and learn every turn of the track with a simulator/game. Well.. 200+ laps later, I had every turn memorized. This time, my friend took delivery of an m2.

We took turns taking laps over two days. An e46 m3 crashed and closed the track on the first day, so I only got one run. =( We weren't originally going to stay another night, but did due to the track closure. At 4:00pm the following day.. 1.5 hours before the tourist are allowed on the track: It hailed/rained!! I was bummed. However.. the sun came out, and gave us a chance. My first lap was a test to see where the track was wet. Anywhere in the shade was slippery. My friend took the car out on the next lap and it had dried considerably. On my next lap, I went all out (to my capabilities, not the cars). It is amazing how similar the simulation is to the real deal. There are a couple bumps that you don't feel in the game. The simulator gives you the sensation that the car is not settled, but it's not exactly clear why. It's definitely clear in person. I was digging in to every turn and the tires were screaming. So much fun. Definitely my best track experience ever. I highly recommend learning the ring on a video game, and then taking a car on it in real life.

I watched something recently where some racing game competition took its best players and tossed them into the ring against experienced drivers, and they all did exceptionally well. Might have even won or placed.

I just bought a 2011 328i with 73k miles; it handles beautifully and we just drove it on an airstrip yesterday and reached 115 mph without a snag.
