Been a busy few days at work, but I managed to get the parking brakes adjusted on Manuel so my mom can move the car. My driveway is about a 20º incline, so I need the handbrake to hold, and before it was just too hard to release. I think the whole assemblies could stand to be replaced, but it's working for now. Pretty weak design, IMO.

Also sold a few parts from Seabiscuit to AJ and a friend of his; the CD53 + aux in, a license plate light, and the MID cage. Stripped down the center console a bit more, too.

I never realized that the bezel that holds the HVAC module and the DSC/PDC/heated seat button bank is made from cast metal! Pretty cool detail.

Got Otto up in the air and I got most of the cooling hoses disconnected. Fan clutch seems to be overtightened, so I finally caved and ordered the water pump holding tool.

Also drained and removed the filter from the automatic transmission. The gasket is STUCK to the body of the transmission, and the filter o-ring is stuck in the bore. Fluid was dark and thin after 146k miles and 15 years, but not much metal shavings on the magnets, and it didn't seem to be burnt. I have zero experience with other automatic transmission fluids, so hopefully everything will go back together nicely and run smoothly.

Stripped the drain bolt; fill bolt was easy to remove. 7mm Allen/Hex hammered in easily and did the job just fine. Didn't strip one of the 22 pan bolts, go figure.

I'll post pics later when I have more time. Currently need to pack and prepare for a graduation ceremony in San Diego tomorrow. Buddy of mine is graduating from the Marine Corps Boot Camp.

Some say never to service a bmw automatic transmission..

My practice would tell me to definitely service one. Especially with the miles you have and that it hasn't been done before.

Agreed. At worst it will continue to operate the same way; at best, it will be more durable and smoother.

Buttoned up the transmission. Raised the rear jackstands one click to account for a tiny slope in the driveway where I'm working. Should be just about perfect now. Filled the trans 'til fluid ran out the hole, but I need to wait for final level adjustments after I get the rest of the car put together, run the transmission through the gears, and check, then heat the fluid and check again.

Water pump holding tool + 32mm wrench FINALLY got the fan clutch off. Fan clutch looks new, but was still nearly seized on the water pump. Grr. Took the radiator and fan shroud out (finally). Vacuumed some bugs out of the heat exchangers.

Detached the front subframe. It's really not too bad, just lots of stuff. Brake lines are disconnected, wheel speed sensors, brake pad wear sensor (left front), six shock tower bolts, six long 18mm subframe bolts. I still need to disconnect either the power steering pump or the lines going into it, and I need to get the steering column disconnected. I removed the column bolt indicated on TIS, but it's still pretty solidly together... Any suggestions?

Prepping for my annual trip to Monterey Car Week. We leave on Wednesday, and we follow the route described in the Motor Trend Epic Drives episode of "California through California." I removed the Euro Dash from Seabiscuit, and am installing it in Manuel tonight. It makes a big difference to my dad, as the increase in knee room is the difference between getting in and out comfortably and squeezing his knees under the dashboard.

I may also replace the instrument cluster; we'll have to see what time I have left tonight and whether or not my patience can stand it.

Got the Euro lower dash in; cluster will still need to be replaced/recoded.

530i5 ran great! I got great gas mileage; averaged ~22mpg, and 27mpg on the way back from Monterey to LA with cruise set at 80mph, A/C at 68ºF, and even up and over the Grapevine. Needs a good wash, now. Used up/leaked ~2qts of oil in 1,366 mi. Need to refill washer fluid reservoir.

Zero reliability problems. There is a squeaking noise coming from the top of the navigation display, right under the center vent, that I can silence if I put my finger on the trim piece. Going to take that stuff out again and see if I can't snug up some of the screws in the dash to solve that.

Got to work on Otto again last night. Completely removed front subframe/power steering system, and the oil pan. Pleased to see that the oil pump nut was still secure, but I am still safety wiring it.

Front subframe will need a LOT of cleaning... Yay.

What's left of the engine bay; no cooling system, no P/S, no engine mounts, no suspension.

Aux water pump zip tied out of the way; windage tray with oil pan off.

I forgot how much crap ends up on your face when you're underneath a car...

It's been a few days; life and work have gotten busy. Finally crawled back under Otto, and have installed a BimmerWorld oil pump nut w/ safety wire and torqued to 17ft lbs as instructed. Had to counter-hold crank bolt because it wanted to move the crankshaft.

Cleaned a TON of grease off of the oil pan using shop rags, degreaser, paper towels, and water. Still have to clean the whole subframe. Yay.

Regarding the oil pan gasket: can I use Permatex Ultra black to seal it up? I'd really rather not do this whole job again. The BMW instructions recommend putting dabs/lines at the front and rear (timing cover/rear main seal lines); could I run a fat bead all the way around without causing trouble?

Oh, and Manuel is up to 194,194+ miles now.

Purchased the CarLami headlight adjusters at the recommendation of other forum members. Unfortunately, one looks like one got busted in shipping, so I'll have to mail it in for a replacement. :/

A week or so ago I picked up a gen-6 BMW ULF bluetooth kit, including the wiring harness and eject box:

I need to figure out the antenna wiring; there are some old antennas (rear window "spike" and rear bumper antenna) that I need to wire into the compensator (?) and then into the wiring for the eject box. I'd also like to get an iPhone 5/5s/SE eject box and snap in adapter.

We're having extremely dry weather; there are some big wildfires not too far away in Orange County, CA. The lighting is really neat, so I quickly rinsed my 530i5 down at the car wash and went to the top of a nearby parking structure for some cool shots before the sun set. That's not clouds; 100% of that is smoke/ash.

IIRC since most if not all E39 came pre-wired for phones, you should have the connector for the cradle under your armrest.
The antenna wire will either be there also and the trunk will have the rest tucked away in the upper right or you use the wire supplied with the kit. (something changed in 03 so i get confused).
    SES jumper takes 2 seconds
Connecting module could vary depending if you have the serial or 52(?)pin port.
Mic is also plug n play.

Hit me up if you nee any help

Yeah, all North American E39s came with phone pre-wiring, IIRC.

In my case, it appears that there was an old wired phone system installed previously, and there are like 5 cables dangling in the trunk area. GSM, CDMA, and more. I think I'm missing the "compensator" module as BimmerNav calls it. I can't seem to find much info online; more research is required.

I thought I had a photo of the wires; can't seem to find it now. Anyways, I will need to take the trunk trim out and make some sense of it.

I know the antennas are entirely irrelevant with the ULF Bluetooth retrofit, but I'd still like to have them working. No idea if they work with an iPhone 5/5s/SE eject box, but that'd be cool.

I think it's a bit off. You shouldn't need the compensator. That diagram is for the OG in-car motorolla at the time.

The newer gen bluetooth system runs it's own antenna to sync/gather data from your phone. It's the 3x4-ish flat rectangle deal and plugs directly into the ULF via 1 wire (or into the harness since it's usually bundled, depends how your kit comes.

Your Iphone is basically the antenna in that diagram, the 3x4 receiver is a router to the car. And the 5s works with my 4th gen , gotta try my SE though.

I know I don't need the antennas, but since the rear glass antenna is already there, I might as well have them in semi-serviceable condition.

R&R'd the entire cooling system on my 530iA. There was a tiny coolant leak, and I wasn't sure if it was the water pump or thermostat, so I replaced both. Stewart stainless water pump went in from my black car, thermostat was a new Genuine BMW spare I had lying around. Also got a chance to clean up the ATF leak from the power steering/transmission coolers; I replaced all four little o-rings. The original ones were most certainly toast.

I think it's about ready to be put up for sale. I need to give her a good wash and do some minor detailing (nice wax, some minor rock chip repair) and take some photos for the ad.

Washed the 530iA. It looks great with clean wheels, but it needs a coat of wax badly. My wash process takes a while; I started around 10am and didn't finish drying the car until 12:15 or so.

Took the 530i5 to work, like usual, but on my way home... Eek. It developed a nasty belt squeak, and a "Check Coolant Level" high OBC message. Lots of steam from underhood, with no really obvious leaks. No overheating noticed, but I suspect the water pump is toast. No milkshake yet; hopefully the headgasket is fine. I'm getting drive belt slip at low-ish (below 2k) RPM; alternator (noted via High OBC test 9) and power steering (noted by my shoulders) disappear at idle.

Ordered a Genuine BMW thermostat, Mahle-Behr fan clutch, EMP Stewart H2O pump, and some brass bleeder screws from FCP Euro. I will be reusing the nearly new serpentine belt and hydraulic tensioner from my black 530i. I will also be replacing the cracked fan shroud. Any other parts (radiator, hoses, etc) will be sourced from my parts car.

It never fails; I have the 530iA dialed in and running great (dare I say perfectly), and the 530i5 nearly blows up.

    - - - Updated - - -

While I wait for parts for the 530i5, I will be driving the 530iA. I hope to wax the car with my favorite Collinite 845, clean up the glass (razor blade to windshield, Rain-X exterior), dress the tires, and clean up the door jambs (ran out of time today) tomorrow.
