In my opinion, it's always good to at least stop the damage and protect the paint, no matter how bad it is. First decontaminate the car using a surface prep towel/mitt/pad. I prefer surface prep-style decontamination because they're washable and reusable; I store mine clay side-down on parchment paper in an unsealed Ziplock. I've had it since Sept. 2015; love it. Then apply a simple wax/sealant, like Collinite #845 or Meg's M21.

I recognize that some people may not care to polish out the swirls. For my mom, she just wants a clean car. Keeping a coat of sealant/wax on the car also goes a long way to keeping it cleaner for longer.

Manuel's done! And my wallet is considerably lighter... But the paint match is pretty great. Toledo blue transitions from light grey/blue metallic to deep blue in the shade to purple in direct light. Very happy with the quality body work, too; panel gaps are 100% perfect. I will have to wait about a month before I apply any waxes to allow the paint to outgas and fully dry, at which time I will reevaluate the orange peel, but right now, it looks fantastic. iPhone pics:

Match is actually better in person than this shows, and the car needs a good wash.

Thanks! Timeframe for all this work is mid-Sept, as I go back to school. I'd like to sell Otto by mid-August.

    Let's run through today's list...

Picked up my tools from my grandmother's house today. I keep moving my four-drawer Craftsman around in my cars as I move work between home and Grandma's house. Grandma has the space, but home is where I have the time, clothes, shower, and a Camry to fix 'cause it blew a brake line a few days ago. Anyways.

    Pieces-parts laying around Grandma's garage:

    4x 17x8 E39-offset and 74.1mm CB Style 71s:
    IMG_1516.jpg

    4x 17x8 Style 49s:
    IMG_1515.jpg

    Seabiscuit, slowly being parted out:
    IMG_1510.jpg
    IMG_1506.jpg

    Parts for the scrap heap:
    IMG_1507.jpg

    Also was fairly productive elsewhere:

    On Manuel, I reinstalled:
    - trunk gasket
    - trunk carpeting/toolkit/handle/light
    - trunk pull-down panels
    - trunk latch/rear trim panel

I didn't give any of these to the body shop; I wanted honest work, not for them to hide anything, and they passed with flying colors.

    Also:
    - wrapped up the trunk wiring w/ cable ties and new Tesa tape
    - reinstalled the trunk BMW badge
    - pulled the F10 hood badge off of Seabiscuit for Manuel
    - pulled Manuel's stock hood badge for Otto
    - programmed the HomeLink controller for my garage

I also replaced the driver's window regulator in Manuel with one that I saved from the trashed door panel from Seabiscuit from my first accident in 2014.

I forget how much wiring these doors have in them until I open one up... wow.

The comfort seats look pretty good for having 191k miles on them! And the butt warmers WORK, too. Better than my mom's Genesis sedan!

Good work. Black seat trims and floor mats dresses up the grey interior very nicely in these cars.

Have to go back and re-open the driver's door, unfortunately. I seem to have put the window in the wrong place on the tracks, and it's binding as it goes up...

Gonna do this at 12am. After working from 5-11, literally scrubbing floors. Yay. I'm so excited. Oh, well, I have this, too:

Thanks! I really like what one user did by dying the door pockets black on his grey interior. Maybe Dking078? And, yes, I plan on dyeing the seat trims with something like the Duplicolor spray dye.

I still may go fully black interior at some point, but the floor mats will serve as a nice midpoint.

I just wrapped up the window regulator job. Completely disassembly of door panel, adjustment of window, and reassembly in ~1 hour doesn't seem too bad to me.

Manuel looks fantastic! Those rims from seabiscuit remind me of the 530/5 my dad had back home. I remember vividly going back to the "dealership" and filling out a buildsheet of this car 1908070_750687168323171_6014477834608703041_n.jpg

Had to remove the steering wheel airbag yesterday to fix a problem I was having with Manuel. Every time I turned the steering wheel 90º or so, there was a plastic-y rattle as something moved within the steering wheel. The small torx screw that holds the volume/channel/R/T/voice command button side of the controls down had come loose, and was making contact on the horn pad, causing the horn to blow randomly as I turned. I got flipped off a few times 'cause people thought I was honking at them. Oops. Easy fix, thankfully.

Also refilled the windshield washer reservoir, and added another quart of oil to Manuel. Ah, oil pan gasket leaks... how lovely.

    - - - Updated - - -

In other news, I actually really like the Sumitomo all seasons (HTR P02 or something?) that Manuel is wearing right now. The Michelin Pilot Super Sports on Otto are obviously way better performance tires, but for driving around town and highway cruising, the Sumis are very quiet, ride comfortably, and pretty easy to live with.

Sumitomos are pretty good tires. I also like the Hankook Ventus Evo V2's and the Continental Extremecontact DW's. All of them are good, affordable tires that perform reasonably well and have a nice ride. I'd never want to drop close to a grand on Michelins, especially with my love of burnouts.

computiNATEor's Build Log - Seabiscuit, Otto, and Manuel

Never had any experience with Sumitumo . I did have hankook Ventus V2s on my Mercedes. After 3000 miles I got a tread separation in one of them, then after another 2000 miles I got a tread separation in another one. Rode like garbage and wore poorly. The headache from that experience has ensured that continental and Michelin are the only brands I'll purchase in the future. I have also had really good experience with Yokohama, I think that may be a good, cheaper tire. Not spectacular performance tires, but good DD tires.

Just don't think it's worth the couple hundred bucks to cheap out on the only thing holding your car to the road after the hankook experience.

Just don't think it's worth the couple hundred bucks to cheap out on the only thing holding your car to the road after the hankook experience.
I would agree, the Ventus V2s on my Style 5s (RIP from accident) weren't great. Loud and short life, but grippy. Maybe they're better suited to lighter weight sports cars?

I think I'll try the Conti DWs for my next tire, or the ExtremeContact Sport if those are available in 235/45/17.

I can definitely vouch for the Extreme Contact DW's at 120+ mph (allegedly). I can also vouch for Bridgestone Potenzas, they're a little stiffer all around but can (allegedly) handle 160mph well in a (allegedly) de-restricted M5.

I hit 140 on the X5 and it handled it perfectly. Now for the car it still wanted to go. A 2011 with 35k miles that has had one prior owner man I love cars owned by old people sometimes.

My new to me, hopefully 530i Sport has Michelin tires. I don't know what kind as of yet but I do know that they are michelins

IIRC, those genesises (genesi?) have electric power steering. I'd be willing to bet that's the source of the wander on center.

I have Conti ExtremeContact DW's on my 540. I too can vouch for them. Very quiet, very smooth, great grip, and they handle great when driven aggressively on twisties (I'm a pretty reserved driver. Haven't pushed it to 10/10).

Actually the Genesises (sp?) have hydraulic steering. There's a small reservoir under the engine cover. It's not BMW-quality, though; very over-boosted and light, but with decent feel. Off-center movement is weird; it's like the first few degrees have a lower ratio than the rest of the rack, which makes correcting the wander a little frustrating. And it's a teeny tiny wander. Since it's mainly used in town, you'd never notice.

The Michelins I've used, the PSS and the A/S 3, are both fantastic. Both can exceed the design of the E39's suspension (even on good Konis), as you really can feel the looseness that comes from rubber bushings in the control arms. The car darts in on turn in, but mid corner once the suspension and sway bars are loaded up, the steering is vague, and there is a some play in the wheel resulting from the soft rubber bushings that are designed for comfort, not sportiness.

Yep, my dads Lexus has AS3s. Fantastic tire. Haven't had PSS though, the deal I got on the contis was too good not to try them.

Electric steering still has a fluid reservoir, no? It's electric assist but still powered by a power steering pump and fluid? That's how I understand it at-least? Interested to know the concept on this.

Not arguing that the genesis isn't hydraulic. Just interested in how the electric assist cars work.

Not that I know of; electric power steering is essentially a manual, fluid-less rack that has a big servo motor attached, IIRC.

"Electronic power steering uses no fluids so there are no hoses, no pump, no leaks and no maintenance."

Tested a ground loop isolator (Aukey from Amazon) in Otto today to rid it of the annoying alternator whine through the aux-input. Works perfectly now, but now I need to tuck it back into the dash with all the other cables.
