I've now "stolen" a wheel brush from my detailing supplies and I'm scrubbing things down, which seems to be working pretty well.
Doesn't matter, I would still use a bucket of Dawn dish soap and hot water.
    Makes a big difference.
I thought the rear main seal was leaking on my car when replacing the oil pan gasket, but there was so much oil all over, it was hard to tell.
However, after replacing the oil pan gasket, it is all dry and clean, so it was only the bad oil pan gasket.
You will be amazed about how brittle that thing is.

Looking for an E39 belly pan , passenger front inner fender liner …

Jason, you're right. Dish soap works really well. Because of its thicker viscosity, it really sticks to the grease and can be massaged in. I ended up working a ton of soap into the pan and the subframe by gloved hand, which lifted the oil and allowed it to rinse away easily with a few squirts from an old bottle of degreaser filled with water.

More cleaning. Reinstalled oil pan after replacing gasket and torquing & safety wiring oil pump nut. Broke one bolt off in the block. Grr. May have to remove pan again tomorrow (the bolt is between the back of the harmonic balancer/crank pulley and front of the oil pan), drill, and hopefully use a screw extractor successfully. Next time it will just be hand tight. Thankfully, I have spare bolts. Parts car FTW! I'm using every bit of that black buffalo. Cleaned oil off the engine block, and the right side mount arm.

Removed coils. Not one has been replaced yet. Cleaned valve cover below engine beauty cover. Removed spark plugs. There was some oil on the #5 plug, but hardly enough to be concerned yet. I'll do the VCG when I get to the CCV/PCV/catch can conversion later this year. Next I will pour some AC Delco X66P into the cylinders to help with carbon removal. My math says about 4.5 ounces will be needed to fully saturate the top of the piston. I should double check that. That's kinda a lot, considering my X66P is only 16oz.

I'm going to stick a tiny USB camera down the spark plug well and take a look, mostly for giggles. I don't expect to see much.

Unbolted exhaust headers in preparation for driveshaft removal. Exhaust hangers need a cleaning before they go back on. They're covered in oil.

I loosely reinstalled engine mounts in preparation for subframe reinstall. Before that happens, though, I need to reinstall the power steering rack onto the subframe. Before that happens, I will need to replace the tie rod dust bots. And reinstall the power steering pump. And fill the system. I will probably replace the reservoir, since I have a new one ready to go. And I need to clean all of them.

Have you noticed a trend here? Everything is greasy.
    Nate J.

Have you tried CRC MAF cleaner? It really cuts grease well, only negative is price and fumes.

I've been using green Scotch Brite pads after the soap has already lifted the majority of the grease to really clean the metal.

Oh, and the RMS is fine. It just looked bad with the huge amount of oil from the pan gasket.

No, but my issue with solvents is they evaporate before I can remove all the grease, leaving a crusty, very dry, gritty residue behind. The dish soap picks up the grease and suspends it in an emulsion without evaporating, allowing me to rinse it away.

Just seen the clean up of your subframe pictures; crikey, amazing how far this stuff goes... Looks like it's well spread and set on too

Is it all back together and ARBs (sway bars) fitted, or is that still to happen?

Just interested in your feedback on them as they're of serious consideration to me (well, the rear ARB more than anything)

No, that’s still a week or more away. I’m a full time student and part time minimum wage worker, and with some semblance of a social life, I can’t spend every moment underneath it.

I will let you know how they feel as soon as I can.

I only had a few hours today to spare, but I removed oil pan again, extracted the broken bolt (barely), replaced, and reinstalled. I then continued the clean up of the Exxon Valdez by removing the exhaust brackets beneath the transmission and thoroughly cleaning them. It's therapeutic at this point.

I also poured a single ounce of AC Delco X66P into the cylinders. When I get the front suspension back on, I'll add another ounce and a half or so and tip the car over quite a bit.

Man, that's gonna make working under your car so much nicer in the future, knowing there's no crud in the subframe waiting to fall into your eyes at any given moment.

Oh, yeah! But the transmission and aft still looks like the "before" photo, so there's still plenty of grease left. I'll clean that up when I get around to changing the clutch.

Speaking of... I just got my tax refund; should I spend it on the rest of the parts I need to do the clutch now?

I wouldn’t eat off of it, considering my last step was a wipe down with brake clean, lol.

I have a spare trans that’s clean and ready to drop in, as my 2nd gear syncros are pretty crunchy.

    - - - Updated - - -

I have already replaced the detents in the spare transmission, so no worries of 5th gear lean.

Got a voice message from Tire Rack (where I ordered the FSDs and H&R springs, because they were one of the few places with the FSDs still in stock); apparently the H&Rs and FSDs are not "usually recommended". I call marketing BS on that one; a spring is a spring and a shock is a shock.

I know. But these aren't springs for an F1 car. It's for a street driven, 225ish hp five passenger sedan.

I think I would buy the kit that has the specific Koni FSD’s with the Eibach springs.
I think the Koni FSD’s used with the Eibachs have a different part number than the typical ones.

Looking for an E39 belly pan , passenger front inner fender liner …

That would be news to me. I know JimLev has H&Rs and FSDs on his 540 (with custom spacer up front), so I don’t foresee any issues.

From what I’ve read and seen, the H&Rs are more stiff and less low, with a less aggressive rake, vs the Eibach Pro kit. I’m looking for improved handling without dumping the car onto the pavement. Paired with the Eibach sways, I want to make the car handle better without compromising usability. It’s why I continue to stick with the standard front bumper.

As I understand it, the Koni/Eibach thing is more a business deal vs an actual technology partnership.
