My 96 z3 will spin starter but not engage bendix. But put it in gear and let clutch out the starter will power the car forward. It's got neutral switch and starter wouldn't engage unless clutch pressed until this started.
Welcome to the Forum!
Okay, what you wrote is a bit of a mess. First I understand that the starter isn't engaging the flywheel, then in the next sentence saying it will pull the car forward, and in the last one claiming you cannot engage the starter with the clutch out.
I am willing to bet that is why nobody has answered you in 2 day.
So this is what I am going to suggest:
1) What motor do you have?
a) 1.9 M-42
b) 2.5/2.8 M-52
2) When you attempt to start the car, have a buddy/person look at the belts, are they moving?

Yeah, something a bit strange here, I agree. To the best of my knowledge, BMW didn't use a clutch switch until 1997.
And certainly, if the starter moves the car forward, then the starter is engaged with the flywheel.

I agree with Chris, something strange is happening. I can think of only way that it appear that the bendix would only engage when the car is in gear. And that would be a broken crank shaft with break before the first cylinder. Probably time to take it to a dealer or a good BMW indie for a diagnosis.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
