Covertible Top Will Not Close Manually

The top on my 2001 330ci will not close manually. I have followed all the directions in the manual as well as watched numerous vids on the subject. The issue is that it will not lay flat near the windshield so that I can manually secure the top with the allen key. The top is pointing up at a 45 degree angle and the allen key does not lower the top so that I can secure it. Any DIY suggestions other than taking it to a shop?

you have to crank and crank and crank till your arm falls off with the allen key. it will close eventually. we cut the key off and put in a drill and used it that way (but do this at your own risk)
