Hello Everyone
Check out our blog about getting your N54 and N55 Intake manifold cleaned by walnut shell blasting. You should have this service done every 30,000 miles and before tuning your engine. Here is a link to the full blog write up on the service we performed on our own Mod Expert Alan's E92 335i and a few pictures

This is is an actual photo of how Mod Expert Alan Wei’s N54 looked after 70,000 miles. Isn’t that a disgusting mess? What’s more alarming is that YOUR INTAKE VALVES PROBABLY LOOK JUST AS NASTY!
And here’s an actual photo of Alan’s motor right after doing the service. You can actually see the valve now!
Walnut Blasting now available at ModBargains’ Install shop, Mod Auto! Take advantage of our introductory pricing!

The beauty of the direct injected engine... No gasoline (which is a brilliant solvent) traveling through the intake valves to clean up all of the mess.

1999 BMW e36 328is with rotary valve engine head
1999 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight

1962 Austin Healey Sprite
Yeah my N55 has a hair under 30k miles so after Santa makes his visit I'll be getting this done. My local stealer is advertising $450 for this. Not too shabby.

With all the di engines out there you'd think there would be an easier solution.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by hundreds of engineers that get paid thousands of dollars for something you bought at Pep Boys because your buddy who doesn't have a job told you it was 'better'?!?
Yeah, it's called "mechanic-in-a-can". Do you really want to send all that sludge plus solvents and detergents through your turbos and catalytic converters?
OP, every 30k miles? I realize you are trying to sell something, but your photos are from a 70k engine. I've done many of these. 30k miles, IMHO, seems a bit premature. Let's be honest and split the difference, say every 50k miles?
I think there's a paper/journal going around on SAE about dealing with these DI gasoline engines and the effect of deposits on the back of intake valves. They're trying to come up with a solution. So far Toyota is the only manufacturer that I know who did something clever about it. They have DI already but added with the conventional injectors on the intake manifold. The idea behind it was simple. To keep the valves or the intake port as clean as possible like always. Clever, don't you think?
Yeah, I actually thought about that... You have to consider the negative aspects though. Increased complexity, cost, diminished fuel economy to say the least. Maybe use conventional style injection only on cold starts? IDK, I'm just a grease monkey...
How often is a blast of detergenated (did I invent that word?) gasoline needed to keep the valves clean? What is the cost ratio for BMW to not do a goddamn thing? BMW will not cover this "service" until it becomes a blatant (misfire) problem.
Get your valves cleaned today and get your motor running healthy again!

Having watch my techs do it it is a complete pain in the ass and Time consuming job. I don't believe it needs to be done every 30 k. Just did one that had 150k on it and it was pretty dirty. But every 30k no. The build up in the before pictures is not very much.
