My car is leaking tranmision fluid where is the leaking coming from? Is a difficult repair? Thanks, for your help.
Usually there are 3 points which leak, provided the trans pan gasket is not leaking: input shaft seal, output shaft seal and the small seal on the side for the selector shaft seal.
So first you have to see and check where it comes from. In case it is the input shaft seal, then the ATF comes out at the bottom of the bell housing thru the plastic vent. Input shaft seal change requires removing the transmission.

Power steering system also uses ATF so you'll need to check that too.
Thank you so much!
Resurrecting this one...
My e30 325i auto transmission is leaking and I can see it is not the Shifter seal. I do have a leakage thru the Pan Gasket but I believe I might also have a leakage thru the Input Seal. I have some seapage coming from the plastic grill area, so it makes me suspect the Input Seal might be bad, not sure.
I am thinking about doing the Pan and Filter first, then keep driving and if leakage continues, I can attack the Input Seal. This way I avoid removing the Transmission, in case it is just the Pan.
Question: to do the Input Seal later, will I need to drain the Transmission Fluid again, or can I do Pan now and Input later?
Thanks in advance
