Of what is the OEM hartop made--can someone please clear this up ?
I've been told it is fibreglass (but perhaps that is the Wiesmann version) and also that it is aluminum.
It's nice and light compared to the only other hardtop I've owned (MB R107 SL), so I'm happy either way.
Any primary references you can share are welcome.
Cheers,
Brad
It's definitely fiberglass .
Stripped the inside off to replace a seal.
You could see the fiberglass strands.

Quite a number of years ago this came up__like 12-15 years ago__and I too was led to believe it was aluminum, because that's at least what BMW's printed literature said it was; the text apparently, incorrectly taken from a Z8's press release (or maybe it was originally planned to be aluminum, but then determined to be cost prohibitive?).
I took one (1__the black one, I think) of my hardtops and pulled back the weatherstrip enough to drill a small (<1/8") hole using a pin-vise. Yes, it is definitely molded in fibreglas!
Thanks, chaps. Very helpful info.
