My e38 never came with the microfilters. previous owner removed the lids and just left the housing. So, can I remove the housing completely since i dont have microfilters in there? will it affect my a/c in any way?
I would replace with good filters. They do serve a purpose.
As I said on FB the air box on the under side of the hood is part of the structure of the hood.

Just curious...but do you run the AC/heat in your home without a filter? If no, would you not have a problem doing so the next time it needs to be changed? Just leave it out.
This is what they do (see pic below)...so if preventing all of that from entering your car's HVAC system and blowing around inside the cabin...then its your call to do without. But if you or family members have allergies...then using the filters really comes in handy...especially during times of high pollen & ragweed seasons.

With no filters, your evaporator will look like this in a few years:

ok thanks yall! i've decided on buying the covers and filters.
I removed mine when I got the car, but never use A/C - leaked and I never got around to fixing it.
But that messy evaporator looks pretty scary!!! =D

Thing is...if you have the IHKA (instead of the IHKR w/its 4 manually controlled dials)...the IHKA comes on automatically...even if you don't press the snowflake (AC) button. So even if you don't use the AC (snowflake button) you would need to also consciously turn off the IHKA every time you start the car...if not, the condenser will still end up looking like the pic above.
The same goes for the interior recirculation filters. A lot of owners assume if they never use the recirculation feature (AUC button)...that their recirc filters won't get dirty. But the system still pulls air from the cabin's interior past those filter regardless of being in recirc mode or not...thus they still get dirty over time and will eventually need to be cleaned/changed/etc.
