I've read here and elsewhere that there are THREE different replacement batteries (and presumably there were three OEM's in new cars of this model).
QUESTION: Which one do I have/need to replace it with??
What's the difference between the three batteries?
Why ARE there three of them??
Thanks for any info.
P.S. The bottom line on "does and e46's battery have to be 'registered' to the car's system" would be a great help, to. Anybody got the REAL story.....like, say, out of a genuine BMW service manual? Thanks.
E46 battires are not registered it's probable a h7 size the last three digits of the BMW part number is like 333 or 334

E46 cars were sold all over the world with engines ranging from 4 cylinder gas to 6 cylinder turbo diesel. They have vastly different cranking power requirements. That is why our cars can fit 3 battery sizes. H7 is oem for gas 6cyl models but h8 is a direct fit (just remove the plastic block at the back of the battery compartment) the extra capacity/cranking power is noticeable on cold days when other cars barely crank mine still cranks strong. Not a big price difference and you are in Canada so it would be worth it to get the big battery. I run a h8 agm in mine.

Battery regestration is only on the newer models. It started with e65 chassis and then e60 and e90 and everything after that. Newer cars have a more advanced power management system that e46 didn't have.

I bought a 'AutoZone' beauty...specked to fit my 2003 325xi wagon.
Guess what, I had less than 1mm to spare...but it fit!
Type 49 /H8 AGM is what my wagon had stock. Lasted 13 years. Bought a Bosch same specs for 170.
If I were to give my Touring a first name, I'd probably name it "Alan".
Mostly because I like puns.

13 years is a long time! I just replaced a 'World' battery that has an unknown install date. My 03 325xi, still has 2 original stock Michelin tires installed...now after 14 years and 116k.
