I have never messed with an e36 318is or z3 with the 4 cylinder in it. How much does a complete supercharger go for? How much power does it usually make with a supercharger?
Trying to decide if I want to help a friend out and help him part the engine out and go m50/m52 or if we should rebuild the motor and keep it alive as a 4 cylinder
I completely agree!! I said get an S52 and ZF and be done with it for a while
Depending on what the supercharger kit is worth will determine what swap he could afford
anybody???
Supercharger worth like $2000??
or is it basically a boat anchor and no one messes with the 4 cylinders any more?
Unless you have one of the old downing atlanta kits staring at you for cheap, I'd ditch the idea of forced induction with an M42/44. You're spending big bucks for little gains; while coping with poor design choices and components not intended to handle much power.

you must of misread the first post. My friend has a 4 cylinder with a supercharger on it. The engine needs rebuilt. I told him I would help him part the engine out in hopes to get enough money to do an engine swap. I'm just trying to see if there is money to be had by doing that or if the engine should just be rebuilt. I know very little about the 4 cylinder so I'm asking. Like if the supercharged 4 cylinders makes 250hp there's really no sense in swapping an M motor in if it is cheaper to just rebuild the motor.
I believe it is an Atlanta downing kit though. I would have to ask him to take pictures
Oh, I did indeed.
Really depends on the goal, I've yet to see a DASC setup make 200whp or 170ft-lbs, so if he's happy with near oem s50us power rebuild. If not, selling the kit alone should theoretically net enough for an M52 and ZF gearbox.

no worries, it happens. I do it all the time! skip to the last post and reply without reading anything else
Thankfully it's already a 5 speed so might reuse the getrag. He is happy with the power, but it's the only BMW he's ever had so he really doesn't know what he's missing
The getrags are pretty crappy transmissions. Get a ZF.
There is always someone hoping to get 200 rwhp out of an M42/44 relatively cheap and simply. I think you can sell the DA no problem. But I would advise the buyer instead to swap in an S52 for $2000.
