My 1985 318i is experiencing a problem with the idle every time it is started cold. It starts right away, and begins to idle normally, but then it starts to run rough and the idle drops to the point that the car wants to stall. If you start it and drive right away, the idle is fine within about 2 minutes. I have tried several idle control valves with no difference no matter which one I use. In the winter months, the car would idle too high when warm and had the dreaded surging idle problem, which was fixed using the penny trick. I had a mechanic friend take a look at it, and he figured that it was the idle stabilization relay on the LH strut tower that was causing the fast idle in the winter. I am having trouble finding one where I live. Has anyone else ever experienced this type of problem and have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
