I'm about to be removing the engine in my e36 and have a lot of questions really appreciate the help in advanced! Is it easier to remove the engine with the tranny? Should I remove my whole front to make removal and installation easier? What's the least amount of things I have to remove? Do I have to remove steering column or subframe? Also do I have to remove shifter, if so how? I'm just re freshening the engine the cylinder head is recently rebuilt just doing the piston rings and clutch anything else I should do since the engine is out of the car? Cooling has already been overhauled. How do you bleed the clutch when I install it back into the car?
I would recommend removing the radiator support, you need to drill a couple spot welds on the frame horns that the bumper mounts to. Then you can pull engine and trans together. unbolt the slave cylinder from the transmission and let it hang, don't unhook the hose. DO NOT press the clutch pedal with the slave not installed!! Steering column and subframe stay in. You will need to remove the selector rod for the shifter and pull the shifter out through the car, look at a picture of the shifter ball cup so you can see how to rotate it with a pair of screwdrivers to remove it.

Removing the steering shaft will make your life easier it likes to catch on the oil pan by the dipstick... gives allot more clearance

With a leveler, mine came out pretty easy without needing to remove the shifter, although I did not have a cylinder head on it and I did drop the steering rack.
Yeah, those are the ones that came with the Harbor Freight leveler. might be 2.5 feet each one. Here's how vertical it got coming out. I had three layers of cardboard and that thick carpet over the A/C condenser.

Lol I think my lift would have fallen over haha... I know my stand barely held it... I put longer chains on before reinstalling and it made a world of difference

If you jack the rear of the car up you don't need anywhere near as much tilt available to pull engine and gearbox without removing the front panel, headlights etc.
Didn't take the bonnet or bumper off either.

Ive unfortunately had to do clutch jobs in driveways by hand. To be honest if you spend all the time under the car for the exhaust and driveshaft removal, it's only a few extra extensions and sockets with a longer handle ratchet to pull the transmission off. Just place a Jack or something under it so it doesn't fall to the ground or on your head. That will make the engine removal much easier, and then on installation leave the transmission on the engine. That also takes the hassle out of aligning the transmission up properly from under the car.
Yah I was doing a lot of cleaning under there too so I never even tried to figure it out without taking out the tranny but honestly it wasn't hard to pull it with the front clip off....

Takes less time to raise the rear than it does to remove and refit the front

True true but was a pretty good way to learn the ins and outs of my car.... I'm usually not afraid to do extra work as long as I get some learning in... and frankly not having the front clip there made cleaning and fixing a few small things so much more simple
