    Gear stick grinding noise.

    Hi all,

first post here, and I'm looking for some advice.

I have recently purchased a F11 520d Touring, and as such before I purchased it did some research and stumbled across the timing chain issues etc so only brought one with full BMW service history etc.

There is no timing chain noise however this is a odd noise (I think) that is coming from the gear stick.

the car is a manual 6 speed and when in gear, if any pressure is applied to the gear stick, there is a grinding scratching noise.

this noise is present in all gears. I drive a few cars and no other manual stick shift car does this, and for the likes of a BMW to do this when something like a fiat, ford or Vauxhall does not is worrying me.

is this normal or something that needs attention? I'm thinking the latter.

    Thanks in advance

    liam

If there is any sort of 'grinding' sound, I would definitely look into this. Other than the noise, does the car shift properly and smoothly?

Yeah the car shifts and engages gears as it should, and there's no grinding or untoward noises when the clutch is down or it's in neutral.

the grinding is only present when the car is in gear and any pressure is applied to the gear stick pushing it away (further in to gear) from neutral. Does that make sense?

You're pushing on the mechanical shift linkage that's attached to the shift forks inside the transmission. Of course its going to make noise. Fiat's are probably front wheel drive cars with long shift rods, or even cables that shift the gears. There is no direct connection to the shift forks without plastic or rubber bushings and linkages. It's apples to oranges.

I can guarantee you there is nothing wrong with your car.
