I saw a used Homelink switch on eBay with the correct color fabric so I bought it. It was like $25.00 with shipping. I also found a You Tube video by an M5 owner that made it look pretty easy to istall, and it was. The plug for the Homelink was up there just like he said, just waiting to be plugged in. I didn't hurt that there was a plastic button in the rear announcing that the car is prewired for the Homelink and a CD changer. Which will be next.
Anyway - Welcome to Homelink!
Nice! I did this install on my e46, super easy install, easy to program.

The problem I have is that the Homelink that is "Original" in the car (2003 525iT) works with my old garage door opener but WILL NOT work with my new garage door opener without extra parts added to the new garage door opener, a HomeLink Compatibility Bridge to be exact. They are less than $30 so the price is not that bad but really not being able to have backwards compatibility is crazy.
According to HomeLink it all has to do with security as to why the new versions are not backwards compatible.

Yeah. Just classic tech obsolescence. Theoretically the better door encrypt is better therefore good and for your "buy a brand new car every 3 years" consumer that's all well and good... Luckily both my doors and my cars are old POS'S

Tested this theory with a 2017 Toyota with Homelink and it will control the New opener but not the Old one. So if you buy a new car you have to go buy a new opener as well.
My problem is old garage is original to house and under it from 1957. New garage is 1 year old and next to house.
Great thing about the new opener is "I can use my cellphone to open and close it", so no real need for Homelink.
Nice thing about the cellphone app is that in send me notifications when it opens or closes. So when the kids get home and try to get in there or leave it open I know about it.
