Got back from the Chumpcar 24 at VIR...what a fucking blast that was. Made it 23 hours before a engine failure took us out. I drove the first stint and the 4am to 6am stint in the dark...and rain. I want to go back tomorrow, VIR is probably my new favorite. I wish I lived closer.

Anyways, got some time this week to start prepping the block. Got started with the stones tonight

Ended up using cardboard cutouts for the cylinders combined with some grease to seal the cylinders. On top of that I used some good ol Barbasol in the passages to keep junk out. Did a fine job and was able to use the shop vac to suck it out when I was done

    After 3 or 4 passes

Time for a new heater valve:

If your M3 doesn’t have 3 pedals and 2 doors, I would really consider contacting BMW to confirm the authenticity of your incorrectly badged mid-sized family sedan.

Barbasol. Now where did you hear that tip from?

I've never heard of doing anything remotely like that, but if it works, great! I just hope I remember that the next time I'm faced with a similar situation__and hope Gillette Foamy is at least as good, as there's always some on hand (face?).

yea, i prefer the North, a little more technical. But the back straight on the Full course is ......crazy long, better for cars.

Anything extra foamy works, I saw it used by a couple of guys on the grassroots forum and thought I'd give it a shot. It did a great job at keeping the crap out of the passages.

Yea at 4am in the morning in the rain I was really glad we didn't have to deal with the north course

Did another few passes with the stone last night and moved to 400 grit sandpaper after for a few passes. Block is done as far as I'm concerned. Nice finish, flat, and clean. Cleaned out the bores and got all the grease out. Mixed up some JB Weld and filled in the two scratches and got it baby smooth with a razor blade. Will see how it looks when I get home. Need to flush the coolant and oil passages and drain the oil. Got the supercharger bolted back up to the intake manifold. Going to carry it over to the fabricator and have a talk with him about moving to the bypass valve from the current blow off valve.

Waiting on block dowels and new heater valve to come in. While I was waiting I decided to go ahead and get the new radiator prepped and whatnot. So while prepping I found where the PO blocked off the throttle body heater line with a bolt. So I pulled the bolt and this is what I found:

Decided to cut the line open to see what it looked like

    Gross...really gross

I ordered the arp thread chaser, ran it through a couple times. Pulled a good amount out of the threads. Worth the 30 bucks imo. With the way we go through motors in the chump car, I figured it was worth it

Sorry, its been a snails pace around here lately. Finally got time to get the head on. I was a slacker and didn't take pics during, only after. Started the 3 day torque process for the ARP's. I thought my nice torque wrench would do 25ft-lbs, but its right at the bottom and I didn't trust it, so I used my super duper harbor freight one. Going to finish out with it as well....ride or die I guess. It hasn't been wrong on anything else I've ever done with it. Bought a used 5-speed trans to replace mine with the bad 1-2 syncro. The trans I bought has the notorious 5th gear lean so I bought the detent kit. I am feeling extremely lazy so Im gonna take it somewhere and have it done.

    Head back on

Off topic but my mom is selling her house and make me pick up some stuff before she sold it, so I happen to stumble across this

I remember playing with it as a kid, was kinda cool to see Senna's name on it.

As I was getting ready to start putting the lifters back in the trays I found one lifter that was collapsed and would not come back up. The PO replaced all the lifters with the INA ones. Only one that appears bad. Do I go all out and replace them all or just buy one? Is it one of those things to just spend the money on and be done with it?

I think it's an accepted fact that you can put new lifters on an old cam, but should avoid old lifters on a new cam.

Unless you're worried about other (used) lifters failing, you'd be okay replacing just the one(s) you need. Only thing I'd add, is that I'd replace both of the ones for that cylinder (like if only one intake or exhaust lifter was bad, I'd replace BOTH intake OR exhaust lifters).

I have swapped lifters from trays to trays, they just are flat on the top, never had a problem in loads of builds, cam swaps

Ended up buying a new set for my car, and I'm going to clean the old ones and donate them to the head rebuild of our chump car motor (Has 320k on it currently). Went with the INA branded ones.

Its been super busy around my house the last few weeks. Helped with the BMWCCA hpde at Barbers, pulled the motor on our chumpcar, and personal stuff has kept me out of the garage for a few weeks. Got all the new lifters in finally and hoping to get the cams back in and timed this weekend. Carried the RMS headers over to my fabricator to have him take a look at the flanges since the gasket showed they were leaking badly. He flattened them back out, said they were not even close to flat, so hopefully that fixes that issue. Ended up carrying him the air to water intercooler to pressure test...looks like it might have a leak. Also carried him the BOV to check out. Its always had an issue with studdering and I've debated about moving to a bypass valve setup to try and fix the issue. Picked up the trans from getting all the detents replaced, feels much better, well worth the $20 bucks.

Anyways, I got the s54 oil filter housing hooked up and test mounted the blower to get the vanos line angled correctly. Everything seems to fit perfectly. I was going to attempted to fit up a drain line setup, but the 90* elbow makes contact with the alternator so I'll pull that off for now. Looking forward to getting her back on the road at some point in the future.

Trays and Lifters back in, cams go back in Sunday when I have someone with some experience in re-timing the motor.
