Ment to email you a link the other day to this thread, thought you might get a kick out of it. Mackin texted me the other day about the car and I gave him the news.

Aside from replacing the HG, what else are you doing that warranted pulling the motor?

Get a lay of the land really. I knew the headers were going to be a bitch to get off with the motor still in the car. As you saw, I couldn't even really tighten them up that well on the car. Replacing some aging coolant hoses, cleaning up the bay a bit. Also looking for a new transmission...would like to do a 6spd but I don't know if its in the budget. Getting real tired of the 1-2 50/50 grind.

Let it ride or replace the flywheel surface for $90 bucks? Using a ceramic clutch that still has life left in it.

    good stuff, im in!

If your M3 doesn’t have 3 pedals and 2 doors, I would really consider contacting BMW to confirm the authenticity of your incorrectly badged mid-sized family sedan.

Doesn't look bad. Your putting the same clutch back on it right?

Yea my packing job sending out to them was no where near that neat. $20 dollars worth of bubble wrap and boxed, then wrapped in bubble wrap and placed in another box.

So last night was dumb, my fault I guess and I don't know if it matters in the long run or not, we will find out when I put it back together. So I put the motor at TDC based off the timing mark on the crank and slap the timing blocks on the cams. Get the vanos off, get the gears off the cams, tensioner off. Go to remove the chain guide and thats when I saw it. The lobes on #1 were pointing away from each other. So I put everything back together and get the cam lobes were they are supposed to be with the timing mark and now the exhaust cam block will not go on at all, not even close. Its a schrick exhaust cam so I though maybe its just one of the bad ones but I dunno know. I kinda felt like a jackass so I just covered everything and walked away for the night. I'll go again tonight and get everything off and worry about the timing when its ready to go back in the car. Real bummer.

Figured out the timing issue, no big deal once I started thinking about it and using my brain. Got all the sensors and whatnot off the head last night. Head is ready to come off, just waiting on my thin walled torx to come in on Sunday.
