Well at least there is (was) a surplus of 6 speed boxes out there in the world... $2500 seems like a pretty damn good deal. Anybody here get one back in the day?

Who here has done it / used it? I've seen it discussed several times and it seems like a good idea, but I haven't seen a completed install. Of course, I had the 420 fail on me (at least once, and maybe twice, I can't remember) in an E39 M5, so about the only things to love about the little-brother trans are its cheap price and availability to the point of being disposable.
I've got one 560 with probably just 1000-1500 miles on it in one of my cars, working as-new. The box wasn't this cheap back when I bought it in 2007-8 or so, but it was a whole lot less than what they want for them these days. I don't love the shift into second gear in my other 560 (in the 850), so I'm kicking around options on what I might want to do with that in the future.
Cheers, John
Odd that it failed on you twice, they can handle a lot more than a stock E39 M5. The main weakness is the syncros, which is why super big HP builds ditch them for T56s and the lot.
I'm waiting on somebody to confirm before I even shell out the money to stuff one in my E32. The guy who listed the procedure will eventually have it completed after he fixes the rest of his car.

I believe it was synchro failure in my 420 box, both times. Too much time has passed to recall the particular details. The car was under original factory warranty and the dealer just kept replacing the whole transmission. (The cost and downtime of service were also the primary reasons I got rid of that car before reaching four years of ownership. Had about 35k on it when I tossed another guy the keys for the final time, I believe.)
Who has the adapter plate for that? That's a no-brainer, and what I was originally looking for 10+ years ago when I bought the NOS 560 for my V12TT project. I approached a couple of the big guys in the adapter game, but to prototype one out, most of them wanted more than a 560 cost at the time. (Like a $30k paint job quote, I think most of them were just telling me they didn't want the work.) I'd put a T56 or a TKO in my stock 850 any day of the week, and pretty well expect it never to break.
The E32 manual swap is reasonably well documented, independent of the V8 vs. V12 choice. I've given more than a passing thought to doing an E38 manual conversion "family car" that I could enjoy driving, but...so many projects, so little time!! Now, if I could get an E38 Touring with a manual...well, BMW would have had an answer to all the awesome AMG wagons out there.
Cheers, John
