Unfortunately there isn't a program equivalent to VCDS for BMW. VCDS is a very well made aftermarket program for the casual mechanic and DIYer, but that's because someone was very dedicated in replicating all the dealer VAS-PC and ODIS protocols for aftermarket use.
INPA (and its friends) is really good, and an actual BMW program from BMW development (never offered for sale, just kind of leaked). It does everything, and even more than a VCDS equivalent. (VCDS lacks flashing and module updates, plus a few other features).
But, because it's a development program, it has a development look and feel. It also has a steeper learning curve.
I suggest getting a better cable and even more research.
The other paid dealer program, legitimately is very expensive, and should use an interface like an ICOM.
