m62tu with bolt-ons vs stock dyno overlays

Ever wonder if those bolt on parts do anything?

Exhibit A is a stock 540i dyno chart, not my car but seems to be a fair representation of what a stock unit should be capable of. Unfortunately I never did my own stock dyno runs before modding the car.

    ">

Next is dyno run with c.a.i., tune, 3" cat back, and m60 intake manifold. This probably represents a fair amount of modded 540's.

next I have overlaid the two charts using cheap software that Im not sure if I'm using right. I could only do part of the rpm range because the testing on my car was from about 3k-6k.
Im just kinda winging it with the "photoshopping" here having never done this before.

    ">

Because the chart is so hard to see I used highlighter to make the lines easier to follow. And took a pic of it. You can guess which color highlighter is which car.

    ">

Notice the torque is not negatively affected anywhere on the overlay. Too bad the second chart didn't stock at a lower rpm.

next round will be after I finally get my headers installed and dyno'd hopefully soon.

Your conclusions are bogus since you did not dyno YOUR car before/after.

I agree it's not purely scientific but I never die dyno'd my car back then so providing that chart isnt an option now. Assuming that the chart of the stock engine is correct I have no reason to believe my car would be any different as all stock engines are exactly the same putting down exactly the same power assuming they all run well therefore there is no reason to believe my stock engine would be putting down more than stock power . Worst case scenario my car wasn't running well which means I started even lower which would make the before and after even more dramatic.

Generally excepted stock engine numbers are 325 tq and 298hp "at the flywheel" which convert to 269.75 tq and 259.26hp "at the wheels". Even if my car very slightly from those numbers my "after" is clearly way higher pretty much entirely across the board. Whether or not I can say the exact amount of gains I can say it's fairly obvious that there were clearly gains.

this wasn't meant as bragging numbers or anything else other than fun because people have always been curious about bolt on mods but no one has ever supplied any data to quench their curiosity. The after car was almost putting stock flywheel numbers down at the wheels so the take away here is yes they absolutely do something. We can always dispute the exact amount so other time.

If anyone else has a "stock" dyno performed on a dynojet please supply it and i will start over if that chart is any different from the one I used. Just remember this whole thing is only for fun and curiosity.

The headers were the main reason I dyno'd my car. I just happened to come across this "before" graph so I threw ittogether for the heck of it. My Ultimate intention is to overlay my bolt on modded car to my bolt on modded car with headers and compare. Judging from what other people have said about various brands i expect upwards of 30 hp but I'm really interested in seeing what happens to the torque curve.

You should get your rev limit raised to at least 6500 RPM to take full advantage of the headers.
Good luck with installing them, make sure you either raise the drivers side of the front motor mount with a few washers or put a small dent in the tube that is closest to the steering box so they won't rub on hard right hand turns.

Reminds me of an episode of Dukes of Hazzard where they bent a tie rod or something and had to do a three-quarter donut to the left because the car wouldnt turn to the right.

30whp increase with c.a.i., tune, 3" cat back, and m60 intake manifold is a really respectable power jump.
If your e30 runs bad, switch to Megasquirt first. Then try new spark plugs, cap and rotor, wires, oxygen sensor, crank shaft position sensor, coolant temp sensor, air flow meter, idle control valve, throttle position sensor, digital motor electronics unit, harmonic balancer, fuel injectors, engine harness...

Photobucket.com is now demanding users pay $80USD/month to allow 3rd party hosting of images. Naturally im not going to pay this rediculious amount.

Anyone know an image hosting site that is still free? Pm me. I prob wont check back here for awhile.

Right click on the placeholder image and open in new tab/window. It'll bring you to the photobucket site and you can usually see the image. Sometimes when you attempt to open the placeholder image in a new tab, you'll still get the placeholder image. You then have to right click on the new placeholder image and open in a new tab and that'll usually show you the image. A lot of steps but it works. mostly...

Alternate photo sharing sites? I imagine they'll all run through the same patterns. Free at first and then realize that they aren't making any money.

Not exactly. Best option if you're tech savvy is reg your own domain and cloud hosting. Dreamhost or whatever. For $20/yr or whatever you get custom email and virtually unlimited hosting of stuff.
