Hello group please don't think that I am just taking the easy way out and not doing the research. I might be an idiot but I can assure you I'm not one of those. I have scoured this forum trying to get the whole picture of how to get a system up and running. I have a 2003 530i equipped with an OBDII connector and am interested in checking/clearing codes, systems and maybe getting access to a few bells and whistles that I have read about during my research. My confusion is, I want to run GT1 or DIS, (it seems these are going to allow me to do all that I am wanting to do and are the easiest to use). What other software do I need to get this going on a windows 10 system ( or if it is easier a Windows xp pro system). I already have a VMwareplayer on my system and on the advice of one of our fellow forum members (328 Power 04) I have purchased a K+DCAN cable so now what else? I have seen tons of info on 20 pin systems and post 2005 models but very little for mine, please help !! Thank you for your time and consideration !
Well now you have to download DIS and set it up. That's no fun at all.
I've set it up once on my laptop a while back, and took it off because I didn't find it to be more useful than the BMW Standard Tools Pack (INPA, NCSExpert, WinKFP, Tool32).
DIS won't allow any custom coding outside of the factory VO codes (vehicle order), so not many bells and whistles there.
You can get started with this pack. Just ignore everything about 20-pin port, and use E39 for everything.

So I read your link and have decided to go with the INAP system. The cheapo vag cable I previously purchased had the ch304 chip so I followed your advice and bought the $20 version from ebay. You have quite a bit of knowledge of these systems and I thank you for sharing it. Iam just a pluugger trying to DIY so your posts are going to be my bible, wish me luck!!!
