OK any of you recommend any factory 18's? Or am I going to get hammered on the 18 suggestion too?
Just exploring my options and you guys are smarter than I am. Really think if I just drop my car a bit I'll be happier.

You could get factory 18" wheels from an E46/E90/, however you'd likely need to get 4 front wheels as their width and offset is easier to fit. Alternatively you could get 18's from a 330i ZHP, or I assume some of the newer BMW's. Look wise, is subjective. I personally don't like the look of most factory 18's on an E36, I suppose E46 M3 18's look ok.
Given the choice between factory E36 M3 wheels and E46 M3 18's, I'd take the E36 M3 wheels. They all fit the E36 bitter from an aesthetic perspective.
If you look at aftermarket APEX wheels are pretty nice and have more fitment options than any other wheel you'll find out there. They have newer designs and I believe most of them accept BMW centercaps so they almost look OEM

I switched from OE 17" to 2 different sets of OE 18" wheels. The first set was staggered off of an E9x 328 sport package. The other set are a square set off of an F series. I am at stock ride height and was using 225/40F and 245/35R on the staggered, and now just using 225/40 on the square set.

17's:
or 18's:
No performance benefit to 19's.
At stock ride height the LTWs lol better. If it were lower the 18s would look good. But still personal preference. LTW wheels are one of my favorite 17s. I've debated selling my LMs for a set. They fit the E36 perfectly

I'd agree with most in that I think 19"s are too big for the E36, unless you're looking to build a showcar, lol. Also, for stock wheels, I think 17"s are ok, but if you're going to upgrade or buy something aftermarket, I would get something bigger. In that regard, I think 18"s are perfect. And if you're going to 18"s, get them wider all around for a wider footprint. Here's a recent shot of my hooptie at a Bimmerfest caravan meet-up.

One of the last remaining members of the E36 M3 original owners club...a dying breed indeed.
19's are tough to pull off but that one with LM's is really nice. I had 18's and that's the biggest I would go.
lol yeah I sold them. I had it in my head to part the car out so the Fikses, the SC'er setup, the exhaust all came off. I have to put the SC kit up and the exhaust back up FS. I keep going back and forth if I wanna sell the car or not.
If I had to put another set on right now without breaking the bank, the Apex Arc8 wheels look nice at a really reasonable price. In 18's or 17X9. Would love to put something concave on if I kept going with the car.

If I decide to swap out my Contours for aftermarket 18's or most likely 17's since that's what the majority of you suggest....what is a good wheel company and what's one you'd definitely avoid?
Looking primarily at Enkei and Niche so far. Also at the Sparco Pro Corsa.

Any major brand should be fine. I look much more closely at how the wheel is made though. The process used has a huge effect on durability and weight. I avoid a plain old gravity cast wheel at all costs now, they just bend too easily over potholes and stuff. Read up here and decide how much you want to spend https://www.tirerack.com/wheels/tech....jsp?techid=90.

Wheels, like speed in general, is a question of money.
There are three properties that all wheels have. Weight, Strength, and Cost. They almost always share the fact that whichever two you pick, the third is the opposite. Light, and strong ain't cheap. Cheap and strong ain't light, and light and cheap ain't strong... Lighter and stronger is ALWAYS better.
Why do you think that forged wheels cost more? Because they are lighter and stronger. My BBS Rg-r's are 17#'s and strong as hell. They are also about $800 each... But I got them with 1990's money...lol (and yeah, I happen to have 6 of them... but that's another story...)
Anyway, the smaller the sidewall you put on (19<18<17) the stronger the wheel should be, so as not to be destroyed if and when you hit something.
I'm running 245-40-17 on all 4 corners on 17x8" wheels, which is plenty for a 320 rwhp street car.
No matter where you go, there you are...

I run 18s on most of my M3s. I currently have e46 M3 18x9 all the way around with 235/40 and it's flush but clears everything perfect and looks sharp. Didn't even have to have spacers to clear the struts. The 135i staggered wheels also look pretty good on the e36 M3 if you're wanting something kinda basic. I personally love the apex arc-8 wheels, but they are pricey. Good luck in your decision
Thanks everyone for the replies. I'm interested in seeing all of your vehicles.
