Hey there, I was playing around today and I retrofitted automatic headlights and wipers. Everything seems to be working fine, although I have a question about the sensitivity of the headlights.
Earlier today I went for a drive and the headlights turned off as it was midday and sunny out, as I entered the garage they turned on again as expected.
I went out again this evening, the sun was low in the sky but it was still bright out. The lights turned off as I exited the garage but turned on again shortly after. I parked, turned the car off and set off again, the lights came on about 10 seconds after driving.
The thing is, nobody had their lights on at this time as visibility was still high. I have read that for some BMW models they turn on when the sun is low for extra visibility, is this true of the E46?
I would like to know if this behavior is normal, or if it could be to do with my retrofit. I could probably make my DIY black windscreen frit better, and there is a small air bubble where the lens attaches to the windscreen (although the bubble should affect the rain sensing more than light). If the behavior is normal I'll leave it as it is.
Penis,
Rob.
Mine are pretty sensitive on my M3 pretty much just as you describe.... so I would be inclined to say that it's a normal operation.

Yeah, they turn on between 4-5pm amd don't turn off till about 9am morning. No one has ever found an adjustment in the coding.
If I were to give my Touring a first name, I'd probably name it "Alan".
Mostly because I like puns.

Ok thanks guys, good to know. At least now I can assume that my retrofit went smoothly.
