Hello guys, I'm looking to swap my auto trans with a getrag 260 from a 1985 635csi with fairly low miles, my car is a 1985 735i with 88k on the odo. My question is what else would be needed that cannot be found in the donor car? Also what is good maintenance to handle at this mileage mark while I'm down there? Any info would be highly appreciated!
Everything is different on the five speed E23 versus the five speed E24. Driveshaft from the 24 will not work, pedal box will not, cross member is different I think, etc. Hell, I am not sure if the shifter plate is even the same, only thing worth grabbing is the trans and flywheel. I guess maybe you could sell the other components off to E24 guys to help recoup some cash.
Easiest and cheapest way to do this is to find an E23 five speed parts car.
Smart things to do...new clutch kit, machine the flywheel, fresh hydraulics (hoses too), new flex disc, rebuild the driveshaft, rear main seal, throw out bearing, reseal the manual box. I am sure there are more, I have not owned a five speed E23 in many years.
