My 05 E60 with SMG transmission, heads up display, active cruise control, sport package, comfort seats, with 140k miles needs a new transmission and clutch. BMW dealership wants $13k to fix, but my local master technician will do it for $8.5K ($7.5k in parts $1k in labor). The car is special with all the features, but I am struggling whether it is worth the money. The engine was rebuilt at 107k miles, has a new paint job, new headlights, and a few other items like the SMG module have been replaced.
Would you guys fix, sell, or part out? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
It really comes down to how much you like the car and if it's practical to get another one. If the engine was rebuilt only 33k miles ago and you have a new SMG module; I would spend the money and get it running properly. I think selling it as is will deter a lot of people. Just my 2 cents...

Why the car would need a new transmission? What is broken?
When slowing down to a stop the car will come out of first gear into neutral. You can hear the transmission clicking as if it is trying to stay in gear. When I put my foot on the break and pull the shift down like I was trying to put it into gear, it would work most of the time. Once going the car was fine and I had no issues.
Did you check the clutch actuator? For the Non-M SMGs it's the most common problem.
The symptoms are more or less fitting. Do you experience some times stutter when starting or in traffic jam?
I have a 6spd manual. I'm guessing the clutch actuator comes with the SMGs?
Fair play mate, what parts are you changing in addition to dmf/ clutch etc and how did the costs compare with say carparts4less/ ecp?
