Sorry if this has been answered but after many searches under this forum and it's sub forums I am more confused than usual. I have a 2003 E39 530i and I also have a ross-tech KII-USB cable . Will this cable work to connect my car to my laptop and if not what cable do I need. I certainly don't want to damage any of the three by just trying it. I love my Vag-com for working on my Audi and my VW and am looking forward to digging into my BMW with all the software programs that are on mentioned on this forum. Thanks for helping me, my head is spinning, I think I need to go lay down!!!

VCDS software will read basic OBD2 codes (engine control module "DME", and some auto transmission "EGS"), but it will not be enough for in depth work.
There is a very technical way to get VCDS cable to work as a virtual com port, to work with BMW programs (INPA, etc etc) but it's not perfect, and will probably cause some driver issues.
I say leave VCDS for VAG products only and get a BMW oriented cable such as "K+DCAN". Software will be another thing, and don't expect VCDS-like organization/layout.
