I have an 1981 733i E23 that has been sitting for 10 years and started about a month ago but recently it didn't. It would make a ticking noise as I tried to crank her over and I eventually got it started but when it did is was revving really high. There was white smoke coming from the exhaust but it does have a hole in it and been sitting for 10 years. There's a lot more issues I know about and need to take care of but this one has me stumped. Anyone know what happened? This is my 4th BMW but my first 733i E23. I want to get this thing on the road as stock as she can be! Keep the classic a classic! Lol.

I would check the air flow meter aswell as the connection plug to the air flow meter. A bad air flow meter or connector plug to the air flow meter can cause your e23 to run rich and blow out white smoke.
