Hey guys, first post on the forum.. long time lurker.
So as I said, no crank no start. I have not had any issues with starting the car. I had a flat yesterday so I had to have it repaired. Car cranked fine when I left the mechanic, cranked fine after work. Would not crank this morning, I hear the fuel pump turn on when I put the key in the 2nd position. When I turn to crank, silence... Not sure where to start. Using my dvom, I get 12.5 at the battery but only 11.5 in the engine bay.
I have read suggestions from the solenoid, starter, ignition switch, ecm.
I only have the 1 key, all dash lights come on. Headlights are bright, radio works, fob buttons work.
Has anyone had this issue? If so could you give me a direction to go down, I don't want to start throwing parts at it until it cranks. My guy is closed until Monday.
Thanks for all your help
11.5 v indicates a weak battery .... or bad terminal connections at the battery ... or a very poor ground connection somewhere
- will it start with a boost with cables from another car?
- or try to swap in a different battery to get it going
... forty-three years of driving before I get behind the wheel of a BMW .... and I am thinking, "why did it take me so long?"
... and then after another 4 years I can't believe that I have two of them !!
First try taking a jumper cable and get a good connection on the engine, by the oil filter housing and connect the other end to the ground lug, if that makes a difference, you need a new ground strap. Otherwise most likely need a starter. You can test for B+ voltage at starter terminal or with a test light you can check if the signal wire has voltage. If the signal wire has voltage when someone turns the key, you need a starter.
