Talking Need help with finding e36 rack for 90 E30

    Hey guys new to fourm

mg dad has a 1990 30 325I and his rack blew. He's looking for a 2.7 e36 rack to replace it.
I don't know much about this conversation so I need some help finding a good rack online as well as the parts needed. He has no problem doing the work we just need a kit. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    thanks

Okay Thanks! Will he be able to set me up with a kit Or does he simply sell the rack? It would be so pain free if we could just buy a kit with all the parts rather then go hunting for them all....

To do the rack swap you'll need a few odds and ends:

-Rack Spacers (these sit on top of the e36/z3 style rack because the mounting tabs are shallower than the stock e30 rack)

-Rebuilt steering rack (you can get a Z3 2.7 rack, but it'll be 500 bucks if you don't have a core to send back. A standard e36 rack is nice upgrade for a street car and can be had for 100-200 dollars less). If you order from Rack Doctor, the racks will come with e36 inner tie rods already installed, so you'll need e36 outer tie rods to match.

-New power steering hoses (You can use the stock m20 325i hoses, but the high pressure line from the pump to the rack will require some bending of the metal fittings to sit correctly)

If your dad's car is an airbag car (1990+) he'll have to dremel the firewall for clearance of the steering shaft, as the angle changes with an e36 style rack installed. Some people will say to bend the subframe tabs to get the rack in and out of place, but I've found it easier to undo the motor mounts and lift the motor a bit. From there you'll be able to get the old rack removed and the new one into place.

I hope this helps. I recently installed an e36 rack into my e30 and it's one of my favorite upgrades.
