Agree. Makes some calls at the various suppliers and see what is available. It can't be a unicorn configuration. I bet Deves is priced higher, but see what's out there with some calls.

Yeah, but you didn't say which ones. Some of us are too dense for you to be inscrutable with! [namely this guy ]
I can't find a cadillac ring set at summit measuring 93 x 1.5 x 1.5 x 2.0, The groove height measures exactly the same as my 4.4 pistons, are you sure these aren't some kind of specialty bmw pistons?

Anyone have thoughts on this gouge? my fingernail slides past it vertically, but horizontally I can feel it

Sometimes pictures can be a bit misleading, but that looks a little ugly to me. Is it some crazy macro shot that over exaggerates the size of the gouge by a lot?

I'm not sure if I missed it, but what is the advantage of using any pistons that aren't either stock or made for the m62?

A couple more pics from further away, There is very little depth to the gouge, It looks to me like a slight compression loss and some oil use, do you think the ring could get stuck or worse?

None so far, but properly built it would be a 4.5L, this one is not properly built

Well there's a potential parts / options vs availability / budget payoff if by crazy chance some GM piston fit... But still theoretical to proving it works well.

BTW just searchin the web pistons for the northstar w coated skirts just like that come up but it's clear the coating is some light duty spray on deal. But the pix look just like what you got so... Would explain a lot...

As far as the gouge, I say that is the least of the problems, so assuming proper rings can be obtained, RUN IT!!
Regarding the piston skirt coating, I'm a bit concerned with that too along with GearGrinder it seems, but seriously, if you can find some proper rings, you are too close to not just assemble this sucker and run it.
I can't tell you (and don't want to think about) how many times I've thought I had an engine assembled just perfectly, and had to yank it back out and tear it back down for various reasons after only a small amount of running. It happens.
What I've learned from that is that in situations like this you just need to do the "definitely necessary" things and just run the bastard. For me a good set of rings seems necessary, but opinions may vary on that.
Eww. Looks like that gouge was there after they machined it. It must have been pretty deep prior. How far above the top ring at BDC? Might be OK, but another core is cheaper than a redo.

This is a great learning experience thank you everyone for contributing.

It's around 37mm down to the gouge, I have not done the rest of the measurements.

Cool! ...so plentifully available Caddy pistons are now fully on the rebuild menu for M62's? (assuming all goes well...)

I contacted all the possible suppliers, Deves is out of business, hastings said they had it, then I wanted to order, and they didn't have it
And then Saturday morning the vice president of Grant piston rings emailed me, they were happy to help, I ordered wednesday and received friday, Excellent customer service.
The specs are, these are standard bmw spec pistons, just 1mm bigger, so I ordered m62tu ringset .040 over
This looks like a correct build, bmw spec pistons, bmw spec rings, cylinder walls prepped the best I can, the cylinder to piston clearance measures the same as my old 4.4, at .002"
I invested in proper measuring tools as many people suggested I do,
The project continues.

Cool, thanks for the info!! I can't wait to see how this works out for you! .002" is about half as much as I like to use for cast iron blocks with boost, but I was expecting these Alusil builds to need less p2w clearance when the block is cold.
I'm still not real clear about these pistons you're using though? I haven't seen BMW pistons for Alusil blocks that have had the dark colored skirt coatings, but I haven't seen that many bimmer pistons, and probably all of them have been from non-TU M62s.
IMG_0962.jpgIMG_0961.jpg
They look almost exactly the same to me, It looks like the dark coating is just wore off on the original 4.4 piston on the left, It is just a "break in" coating from my research
