Have you got an inside dial calliper you can use to measure the bore?
Perhaps this is a non starter attempt at a rebuild with a rebore... Which could explain the new looking cross-hatching

    Makes sense thanks.

I measured my original 4.4 block at 92mm, and this new mystery block measures at 93mm. It looks like I have 4.6 pistons in a 4.4 block, does that make it a 4.5?

You need a dial bore gage and have to check at least six places in each bore- top, mid, and bottom of the stroke parallel to the crank and perpendicular to it.

You need to be sure the bores aren't barreled.

If size is on, and cross hatch looks good, it is good.

Check piston skirts for scuffing and check their sizes as well.

Check ring gap widths and make sure they are clean. (A broken old ring makes a good gap cleaner) New rings should be on the list even if it was a recent rebuild. More than once I've run into compression rings on "rebuilt" engines with stacked gaps. That doesn't work well.

Since it has been rebuilt I'd also verify piston height. It may have been decked and you need the appropriate gasket if so. But I imagine you are already looking at that since you are putting blower on top.

Since I now have a 4.5L same bore size as the 4.6, do I use the 4.6 head gaskets?

Measure first, check your bore properly and then swept volume as you check your deck height.
Only then can you be 100% sure what you've got, and it takes no time to check.
I think there is a way of checking what the block was manufactured as, to give you an idea of the how and where it's been modified, and then you can decide on your next course of action... Whether that be just put it together and hope or take the pistons back out to give the bore a surface treatment, if only to be sure.

I am planning to polish the cylinders with the an-30 and felt pads, reading all the above posted threads has been very informative

Exciting! I think you might be the first BF.c member to actually post up that he was going to do that, and if you post results for us afterward, I think you will be the first in that regard also.

I confirmed with the machine shop this engine has never ran after rebuild, there is still green machine goo on the valves.

This is now a 4.5L build

I ordered the sunnen an-30, the heads are at the machine shop being checked and having one of the hoist bracket mounts refabricated

Pretty cool! Would be a very nice score if the pistons fit to bores with correct clearance and rings can be gapped.

Just do the special paste treatment to ensure cylinders are surfaced prepped right and build her up.

Could this accidentally become the TT boostmaster block of the future?

    Stay tuned kids.

    More hi-tech goodies.

The expected lower compression should help with the supercharger compression/detonation problem, if thats what taking out the rings. This might be the combo to facilitate running a S/C.
Those pistons looked clean but used. Is this correct? Do you jave one out yet to check the skirt condition?
Have you checked head and block id yet?
Is piston deck height the total length of rod and piston? thats what google shows me, if so I don't have a accurate tool to measure that, tape measure is what I have that size.

I'm assuming these are 4.6 pistons as those are 93mm, these could be some other type, they are shiny inside and out either new or cleaned really well

Block and heads are stamped b44

2002 date lines up with X5 4.6 production.

Take note of this Alpina B46. No markings whatsoever, along with a different finish.

Then it's just the super professional bore\stroke. Makes sense that BMW would ship them plain jane 4.4s.

I mean, that's what they did with the M7x.

Does the piston top stick up past the block?

    - - - Updated - - -

And all 4.6s are cast with 4.4 in the rear water jacket. The i.d. boss gets shaved and restamped.

Yes it does stick up, visually way less than 1mm, how accurate are you looking for? I can set up my dial inicator in the morning
