I've always wanted to update my 2001 740i 's head unit but never got to it because of the DSP and HVAC issue. Anyone know if Avant has a unit that will allow me to install on my vehicle? I saw Franco90 did a beautiful job installing his unit, but I just don't know if I want to spend all that time/work installing a head unit from China because I know they are known to stop functioning after several years...

    Thanks in advance everybody!

I initially tried an aftermarket style double din Kenwood from memory but they could get it to work so I went with the AVIN. You US guys are lucky because everything is so cheap but we seem to pay double for everything her in Australia so the AVIN unit isnt that bad plus it looks closer to stock. I also used Bavsound and a GAS passive crossover to get everything talking to each other and it was a fairly expensive exercise topping out at close to $4k with install and while it wasn't audiophile quality it was pretty damn good. I am not sure if I will tackle an install myself but I am also a little wary of so called "pro installers"
Soooo did you get it yet? Installed? Pics?...

Installer is coming Tuesday after we had a bit of a false start with working out all the cable connections and parts that came with the unit. Will hopefully be able to post some details during the week.

Yay! I’m reading it’s a complete piece of crap from the e46’ers. Let us know if you have issues with static noise coming through on low volumes. I can deal with Bluetooth that disconnects on its own, a system that reboots on its own, a 7 band equalizer that’s useless, etc. static noise in inacceptable.

Do you have the factory amp or aftermarket??

Ok so I’ve had the unit in for a week now and finished today.
overall I’m very happy with it, my DSP amp is a bit dodgy and needs replacement but the sound is good, but I blame the amp and speakers for the sound variation not so much the unit.
ultimately you have pre outs etc so can do your own thing if you wish.
    Pros:
OBC fully functioning and you can customise IKE display for things like speed, coolant etc which is VERY cool.
Very fast between apps, downloaded google maps etc. very responsive, better then my iPhone 6
Tethered web access used for live traffic updates etc, very good, no issues in a week of daily operation
Good phone support, made plenty of calls and use Apple Carplay no issues. (Have mic on a pillar)
Play music on car play while bouncing around apps and using google maps, no issues.
Car coding through the ibus again, very cool. Set indicators to 3 flash default, no issues.
Reserve camera is good quality with guidance lines.
Install was good, no issues with the cabling and unit

    Cons:
About 45sec start up, not a major deal. Sometimes boots twice at start up.With direct USB playing from prior use, music starts well before startup is complete.
Lack of install instructions, you need to look at the E39 video a couple of times but hey it’s done with no issues.

thats my take so far, looking forward to stretching the use more over the coming weeks. Again my opinion based on my car and setup, each will make their own thoughts on it

Wow!! Thanks so much for the thorough recap. Funny that they can't be so thorough on their own website. Well, we probably wouldn't trust it anyway until one of us bit the bullet. Thanks for taking one for the team! Looks like a great solution!!!

Hopefully it works better on the e38 than on the e46!

how does the button illumination work? I know the colors match, but does the brightness match?

I hear that the volume knob is a cheap faulty item that doesn’t work predictably. No issues with yours?

Can you confirm that there is no static noise coming through? How does the sound compare with factory?

    Is the equalizer any good?

Colour and illumination look factory, I can’t tell the difference in the first week of use, fair bit of that is at night as well. Triggers off the loom, so I’m assuming the Ibus is reading an illumination signal, there is an illumination line marked but I didn’t connect it as I was getting illumination already

volume knob feels solid and robust so I have no idea what the issue has been there. Every bit as good as my 16:9 unit in my 740

no static coming through, sound compared to factory is tough, my 4:3 unit wasn’t working at all, my DSP amp is still playing up, but the clarity seems fine so far, again hard to determine where some of the issues are with old speakers and a dodgy amp, but I’m systematically cleaning each area up.
Compared to the standard non dsp unit in the 740 it is an improvement by a long way, will probably look to change that out now as well actually.

Equaliser seems ok, really need to nail the speaker, amp issues to determine impacts, so far DSP effects are there and lots of independant adjustment.

I am not an audiophile and don’t profess to have highly tuned ears, I do enjoy appropriate tech and am fussy around performance and am suitably happy overall with no major call outs so far.
I think if your expecting these cars to deliver very high end audio output then you ditch the BMW system and go full aftermarket amp, setups etc. Personally this looks suitable for my needs and I can go aftermarket amps still if needed.

I have had a bit of moan about instructions or lack of them with Avin. Lots of assumptions made that everyone would know what goes where. Hopefully after Tuesday I will be able to report on the whole deal.
They should have a complete install guide for each car or at the very least a schematic for all of the connections etc that are vehicle specific. I was happy with the Avant 2 in my M5 and sometimes it takes a bit of time to iron out the bugs...and I applaud them for getting a unit to market that suits our vehicle.

    • Aux Ventilation
    • Date/Time and Metric/Imperial Units settings (for Check Control)

Plus, there's the matter of fitment.

Don't get me wrong: I'd love an updated video/nav unit. But as much as I want to like 'em, I hesitate.

For those worried about losing functionality. I downloaded this app https://www.ibus-app.de/index.html to my tablet. It should work with any android power head unit. I haven't receive the cable I need. But once I do ill report back.

Apparently they don't own cameras or smart phones.

Perhaps I might have been making sure that I get it all working before posting my experience and waiting another week before installer came back

Waiting for my VIN to load on the IBUS site so I can activate it and the DSP but may not get post done until next week.
