It will get interesting to see what happens when these cars start crossing auction blocks, but if a '91 auto in a launch color with aftermarket wheels breaks $20k I will be very surprised.... If it reaches $35k then I think we can pretty much ring the uptick bell and strap ourselves in for the big 8 series boom of 2017...

I'm sure Alex over at Glen Shelly Auto will be watching carefully.... Not sure how that 22k mile Glacier Blue is still available.

Alex sez he has a miserable time selling any kind of 8 series in Colorado. I think if that GletscherBlau was in California or Texas, it would be gone the first day it was listed.

There was a red auto 850i on ebay a while back that hammered out at $24k. It had tasteful mods, good records/maintenance and only 46k miles. I'm not saying 25k isn't possible, but I think that may be a stretch. But that's the thing about auctions, all it takes is the right two pairs of eyes competing for the same car....

I'm currently directly involved as an Agent in the buy/sell of a few CSi's and one 6-speed 850i. The cars have a genuinely high enthusiast and price interest (with new wealthy buyers on the market) and are being exchanged without any advertisement or Auctions. I cannot disclose any prices yet but soon we'll have a professional agency and website dedicated solely for these types of transactions.

That's cool man, I like very much. I really like auctions for figuring out market value, it is the purest form of price discovery. I have no doubt where e31's are going, it may take a bit for NA to catch up to Germany though.

Catawiki has another e31 up for auction:

Yep happens in EU as well, thing I have not figured out yet..... value difference EU spec CSI vs. US Spec CSI.....(EU Spec is the orginal one, US spec missing some technical stuff, but has wood standard and lower production numbers) !?
Will EU buyers start buying US spec cars or US buyers EU spec cars ?

Yes correct on both notes. It has already started happening. Exchaging cars across the pond. I've driven both types of cars and there is no difference in the speed and handling. I personally prefer the US style over Euro due to the wood. The Euro which one I drove had the lighter wood which made it nice too.

Driven both as well: far better cornering (higher speeds) and lane changes on EU model. AHK (rear wheel steering) makes a big difference. And brakes (US specs CSI has standard brakes, EU M-brakes) also big difference.
And agree: I love the wood in US spec cars but dislike the mirrors.

I wish they would've put the fine wood in all the Euro models too.

One which many did not take unfortunately. After 25 years, the wood is the main reason the interior of the US CSi's look very nice still. The plastic one's, not so much.

As much as that dealer touts the rarity of the color combo, it is my personal belief that most 8 series enthusiasts would categorize the Calypsorot launch color as being one of the least desirable E31 shades. No offense to Calypsorot owners of course, just my observations. I don't think the silver-grey interior is helping much either, along with the automatic and factory (?) chromed turbines.

I'm actually looking at a local 840ci for sale with factory chromed wheels (spare is still original finish), and a friend just got a 850i with factory chromed wheels too. I'm guessing the dealerships had the wheels dipped as an option for customers? Or did it to bling the cars up when they weren't selling? Either way I can't stand the chrome rollers, but at least it's the easiest of all mods to correct.

Oh man, that is a fairly minty looking ride.

That's interesting. I always figured that the Diamond Black was the least favoured, along with white.

Here's an e31 with the same mileage as that Calpyso-rot in everybody's favourite colour-resell red, at less than half price :

I bought my first six speed last week, otherwise that thing would be all mine. (Anybody wanna buy a kidney?)

Jet black was my first E31, and I will never buy another black one; not as long as I live in Arizona anyway! The car does look pretty sharp in black, but with a whopping 42% of the North American E31s being in some shade of black, it's never going to be a stand out color for rarity. I don't mean to start a color war here on this thread, I'm just trying to suggest some reasons for the low mileage Calypso car having a hard time selling.

Either way, congrats on your new 6spd!

    Too many ;-)
I believe it's the price more than the color that is holding back that sale. After all, one man's Calypso is another man's Oxford ;-). Same thing on the 22k mile Glacier Blue. Despite what we might hope as owners, and with very few exceptions (e.g. The eBay sale for $24k), the automatics are not yet $20k + cars. It would be interesting to know if the eBay sale actually closed. I've found that just because the auction closed, it does not necessarily mean that the title changed hands as a result of the auction.

Oui oui oui mon ami - Well noted... I am a sucker for dark green metallics, and you certainly know my bias first hand! LOL That said, I do think that the Glacier blue car represents the upper end heartbeat of the 8 series market right now, at least when it comes to earlier production E31s of the 4HP24 variety; and as you said it seems that ~$20K is about the ceiling... Which makes sense for the most part. I paid $20K for my 83K mile '97 850Ci (with some CSi mods) back in 2010, so I'm assuming the nice 5HP30 cars are at least starting around the $20K mark these days...but you don't seem to see very many (of the whopping 363 cars) lately, although there have been a host of late production 840's popping up. Interesting times for the E31 either way!

A purple EU spec CSI, with dark wood (center, dash, doors) and 2-tone leather interior (dark purple and and light grey)......if it even exists.

I would go for rare color combo's.

The market needs to stay where it is for the next month or so. Or at least until I can pick one up! I need to get my dang Porsche sold before I can start hunting for an 8.

    I know what you mean...

I'm debating selling my 2000 M Roadster and my 1999 M3 to get a low mile, one owner 840Ci I found locally at a dealership. I actually offered them both cars in trade, plus cash, but they couldn't make the numbers work (still leins on both my cars but I did make them a very fair offer IMHO). They have the 840 valued about $5500 too high (also IMHO) so I'm never going to get anywhere with them without cash in hand. I hate it when dealers get these cars. The only good thing, is that they usually have them priced so high that they tend to stay on the lots for the duration of the dealership's inventory window, giving you time to plan a strategy...

I have '04 Porsche Cayenne Turbo that I'm actively trying to sell. I also have a '94 Jeep YJ w/ a lsx engine that I'm considering selling to have a little more funds for an 8. Wife is making me get rid of a few toys before I buy another. If she didn't make me sell stuff to buy more, then my house would look like a used car lot! Smart wife.

There is an '94 840ci that I've been eyeballing close to me. The price is about right for year and mileage, just don't know if it has any service history. I haven't called on it since I don't have cash in hand, but hopefully soon.

This BaT listing should be interesting and a pretty good yardstick for an early 850i automatic:

I have had my 96 840 for sale for a month now and can not get a bite, and i think it is priced pretty good with just a few minor things wrong with it. Not sure how low i need to go. http://www.ebay.com/itm/253002026860...84.m1555.l2649

I would be interested, but Savannah port is kind of far away, over 1k in transport cost. (we messaged via ebay)
840s are slow movers in US.
