Was just looking through completed listings on Ebay. Noticed that almost every auction within the last 6 months is green (someone purchased the car), even salvage cars!
I wonder how many more cars need to be scrapped for the prices to really start shooting up, it's all supply demand driven.
I came across a thread on 8 series values from 2010 when the prices bottomed out. Looking at the prices today they are double what they were in 2010... Just not sure if this is just to do with better economy or genuine interest in the 8s as future classics.

Maybe with the new 8 series announced and Alec's video, now on BMW's web site, it may spark some renewed interest. We'll just have to wait and see.

Interest in 'classic' cars has skyrocketed in the past couple of years... so of course BMWs most legendary model will be of interest to people its a shame they got so low, it put many 8s in the wrong hands.

It's a natural path for a rare sports car like ours. Ferrari Testarrossa was around $40-50K only 4-5 years ago. Now it changes hands for around $160-240k and continuing to rise still. Major boost. Same will go for E31. Obviously not for the beat up one's, but the well kept, clean and enthusiast owned one's.
Right now the E31 Aplinas lead the way with 150-200k price range followed by CSi's and so on...
The embracing of our cars by BMW AG recently, more so than the annoucement of the New 8 has raised awarness and interest in our cars. Us 31.000 guys who have owned and protected the E31 will be handsomely rewarded in time; specially the core group whom have been mostly active within preserving and promoting this beautiful machine. At bimmerfest in a few days, we will see the changes. Just watch how people will flock to the E31 section. More so than ever before. Be ready for the most fun bimmerfest ever.
Alec.

It is really interesting the attention these cars get. I also have a 1979 635csi that I have owned and cared for now for nearly 35 years. That car receives far less comments and thumbs up than my 850. Amazing!!!

@ tvjake2: So true!
Germany drives this market, NA lags but will always move with any price appreciation in Europe. Same goes for BMW's, Mercedes, Porsche, [insert past or present German manufacturer here]. Just about everything BMW one would call a youngtimer (near classic) is in a price appreciation trend. That would be most models from the e28 to e39.
Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt releases yearly statistics on registered vehicles by make, model, age group and gender. While base model e31 values may have hit their low point some time around 2009-2011, total vehicles registered kept dropping yearly until 2015 (1.1.2014 - 1896, 1.1.2015 - 1907). 2016 saw 4 more base model e31's added to total vehicles registered. That trend is also evident across all e31 variants. All variants showing yearly gains in totals vehicles registered since 2014.
A year over year gain in total roadworthy vehicles registered for a model that saw yearly losses for over a decade indicates not only interest but real demand. Considering normal attrition (miles, accidents, rust, driveline failure), especially for a 25 year old car, that really puts things in perspective. I think as the e31 nears classic status in its home market it is going to require some fairly steady price appreciation to keep up with that interest.
Anecdotally, an associate of mine was at Barret Jackson back in January. He said the 850i had a throng of people around it steady, and all the other cars near it were chopped liver.
Very good info, thanks!! It would make sense that the number of registered 8ers is going up, so many restoration projects going on in EU, in Poland for example they are bringing back completely dead rust buckets by stripping the cars down to the frame , repairing and restoring!
One thing I noticed in EU majority of the 8 owners are quite young where in NA at least in my experience average owner is over 50....
Also looks like the 1996 1997 840ci models are commanding a hefty premium over the automatic 850i and ci models...

In base model e31's you have 45 under 29 (of age) owners, 730 owners over 60 (age), and 271 women owners. Those ratios collapse in regards to the CSI models, there is only one owner under 29 of both CSI variants listed (1.1.2016)
I think that 840i/ci premium was more prevalent a couple years back. If you weed out all the e31's over 100 000 km, and cars outside Germany on modile.de you really don't get any depth of supply in either the 840i's or 850i's until the 30000 euro mark. Slight premium to the 840i's no doubt, but nowhere near where it could be considering rarity and other factors. Following other BMW models of the same era I notice the market tends to skew higher prices to performance (engine size) more than anything. The additional torque and horsepower number with the v12 is a big selling feature for sure.
The Poles do good work for sure and are partly responsible for keeping registered numbers up. I've seen a lot of low kilometer Japan e31's both on mobile.de and a couple dealer sites I follow. This dealer is singlehandedly responsible for propping up the numbers for registered 840i's in Germany:

Supercharged Tbirds, V8 Tbirds, V8 Mustang Convertible, Audi V8 Quattro & Audi S8
You also have to realize that much of the recent (past 2 to 3 years) interest in Germany has been in the repatriation of 840 Platinum cars from Japan and the middle east. Many e31 enthusiasts are actively pursuing these models.

I've been noticing that reddit (r/cars and r/bmw specifically) has been more and more positive towards the e31. Around when I bought my car (1 yr ago) there would be positive comments, but most would be negative. Basically just shitting on the car. However, lately I've seen a lot more positivity towards the car. Not sure what happened, but I'm happy about the change lol

One auto and a manual, both auctions should give a real good indication where interest is at. Bidding already kicked off with 11 days + to go.

https://auction.catawiki.com/kavels/...bmw-850ci-1993
Three days left and the premium on manual transmission becomes readily apparent. I wouldn't be surprised to see the manual go for low 20g Euro. The auto should finish somewhere in the mid teens, going by earlier auctions. Maybe higher.

Ya, and neither was in Germany, where I think they may have gone for a little higher (or factor in transport costs). Spain and Italy are tough markets to sell into.
I'm surprised that ebay Calypso six speed sold so low. It was only 10k miles more than the one on Catwiki and sold for way less than half. But then, ebay sometimes is a crapshoot.
