I have a 1995 BMW 540i with a dme throwing a check engine code and I need to start a new one. Is it possible to buy a used one and plug and play or would I have to get it programmed to work with the EWS system?

I think you can find a dme cheap as chips and have it installed on to your car. Need a "friend" with an autologic.
Or just call Dudmd!!!

Assuming a DME fault not in the coding chip you could simply swap the chip into another DME.
If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark Donohue
Use a 404 dme, clip and leave unplugged the green wire at pin 66 in the dme connector. Now you can use any 404 dme, or aftermarket performance chip without worrying of the EWS
The EWS module behind the dash will still recognize the chip RF and enable the starter circuit. If not its an easy bypass to completely disable.
I just found out that I can just swap the chip from mine to another DME and it should work just fine.
if not I'll probably just cut the wire for pin 66 and use a 404 lol so Ross you were right
