    Love your build so far, thank you for all the info!! Will be starting mine soon as my car is back from the paint shop. Question on the steering column, is there any change in steering quality or feel going to that telescopic column you are using?

    Ruly: We haven't progressed as far as we would have liked. But it appears we have a real start date in 2 weeks.

    Steering shaft: not so much the column...just a thinner shaft to gain extra room thru the headers. Believe it will be similar to OEM (understand and E46 shaft can also be used although don't believe it is thin as the one we will use). This is based on others experience...of course.

    Thanks.

    Happen to find myself in Virginia where a fellow M3 swapper lives. Chris put a thread together on Grassroots Motorsports where I've been following. He was more than accommodating showing the car...goldmine if info considering his obvious success at not only a running example, but one that is a rocket!

    https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/fo.../124020/page1/

    Big kudos to his workmanship and exercising the 383 powered car. Certainly got my blood going...perfectly timed as we are about a week out from tear down of our own M3.

    Thanks Chris!

    Finally some more progress:

    Realized our modified truck windage tray wasn't worth it...when the oil pump pickup didn't fit...so another Summit order:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/25BGhxs]

    Lift plate install...love all that aluminum!:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/H4dbdx]

    Modifying the power steering pulley for easier access to the pump bolts (mod swiped from Chris):

    Installing the pulley:

    Very nice headers!

    Are you planning on dropping in the block with headers on?

    Usually you cannot put motor with headers already in place or it is extremely uncomfortable to do. They have to be out on afterwards.

    More progress...

    Vibrant 3 inch merge into single 3.5 inch. Beautiful piece...we plan to run a single 3.5 inch pipe to the rear bumper with at least 1 muffler:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/JJuLYb]

    Finally got the oil pump pick up installed with the correct windage tray and blue seal:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/HdgmMD]

    Front cover torqued permanently:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/HdgnAc]

    Driverside header temp installed:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/25LLY9j]

    ...only one wire boot touches...likely due to the bulky OEM Delco boots. I may be even be able to just trim a portion off for clearance:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/25LLYrJ]

    Chuck's header to mount puzzle...stunning work:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/25LLXMh]

    And steering shaft clearance...look at the flange thickness - 1 7/8 header tube into 3 inch collectors:

    Progress...FEAD installed except the AC portion. That will wait until we have a running car:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/25wEMYX]

    Engine in the air to fit the oil pan permanently:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/26U9kti]

    Missing a bellhousing dowel pin and starter bolts. Another Summit order...

    Adding the clutch...LS7 flywheel:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/26ZPazo]

    LS7 Disc:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/274JmX8]

    LS7 Pressure Plate:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/25GbEP2]

    Of course I installed the wrong pilot bearing...from an LS7...should be a small Camaro unit deeper in the crank due to the bellhousing height difference. So back to Autozone to get a pilot bearing puller to destroy my newly installed bearing. Amazon will deliver a GM one on Sunday...

    Did prep the car...final wash before entering the garage:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/25GbTtF]

    Hopefully we will eliminate the 4 types of leaks currently marking my driveway:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/24iZbiw]

    Unsure how much we will get done on Mother's Day weekend...

    It has begun:

    Today's result...no assistant so...:

    Today's lack of progress courtesy of the local airshow (loved the P-51's roar), stripped bolt, and stubborn radiator support factory spot welds.

    18 05 13 M3 Day 2

    The Camaro pilot bearing showed up...in the freezer for the night. Will attempt to mate the engine/trans tomorrow.

    Huge kudos to Tipsy for laying out the details of repositioning the ABS setup for hydraulics. Providing the following list:

    CNC-325 3/16 Nicopp x 25 feet
    BLU-8C Small Union
    BLU-10C Large Union
    BLF-39C Small 'b' nut
    BLF-48C Large 'b' nut

    Purchased from Advance Auto Parts for ~$68.

    We finally got a look at the ABS system upon removal of the air intake tract...looks like fun!

    Thanks Tipsy!

    Tonight was Boy Scout night...so limited to installing the pilot bearing...deep in the crank to make up for the 'short' Camaro bellhousing:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/276KshJ]

    Even went so far as getting an Autozone bearing installer tool to ensure undamaged needle bearings - I've done that before!

    Today's progress...installing the transmission!

    Today 'I' pulled the exhaust - incredibly heavy as one piece unit!:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/HBb8HK]

    And driveshaft:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/HBb8mx]

    My assistant was busy with finals preparations...better for it as I neglected to blast the bottom of the car before disassembly and the power steering leak was something fierce. What a mess...

    All the ancillaries are disconnected. Tomorrow is the engine pull.

    Question: the various heat shields beneath the car...believe there are 3. All appear to be in good shape although covered in PS fluid/dirt. Do most retain these? They seem to be well constructed (made in Switzerland!)...but may interfere with custom exhaust.

    Thanks.

    Well highly successful day today. Became experienced at removing an engine from a BMW M3,

    Preparing:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/27jDLZX]

    Pulling (darn steering shaft!):

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/24yYP9C]

    Assistant at work:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/24yYPGS]

    Success!:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/27jDPF8]

    Empty, but with 229,000 miles of dirty:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/27fyzF9]

    Cleaned up real nice!:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/24yYNFy]

    S52 for sale...and with luck will go home tomorrow to a new owner for $1100:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/27jDMjV]

    VIN Tag at the rear of the cylinder head...this head (and likely engine) is original to the car - kind of cool:

    Is this normal for wiring and what exactly is the engine wiring harness?:

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/27jDLKt]

    Will I use any of it for a stand alone Holley HP EFI system?

    Thanks.

    The one for the driveshaft tunnel was trash so I removed it and have been running without it until now with no issues. I have a new replacement that’s going in when I have the exhaust mid-section remade and it’s going to need a little tweaking to fit near the GUIBO because that’s sitting further rearward with the T56. I think the heat shield for the fuel filter can go back on with no problem. The one for the passenger side that covers the rear control arm bushing might be in the way. I removed it on mine and snapped off the studs that hold it because I guess they were interfering but I don’t really remember.

    My car was very low mile and super clean. I gave away the tunnel heat shields when I sold the exhaust, simply because my garage is small and I wanted to keep the clutter to a minimum. In retrospect, I realized most have been able to utilize the larger of the under-body heat shields with the swap. I've since regretted letting mine go because everything I've been able to find used is in much worse condition than those that I gave away.

    Keep what you have until you're sure that you won't use them

    At the every least, you're going to need the connections to the X20, X69, etc. Hang on to it all, until you're done.

    If you haven't already figured it out, the three relays on the fuse box (circled in red) that are under the fuse box cover are simply attached to the outside of the fuse box with little tabs that can be easily depressed which will allow the relays to be removed from the box without cutting any wires.

    All - very helpful.

    I will retain the heat shields as all are in good shape...although the big one is incredibly dirty. Great job for the assistant!

    I did manage to disconnect the entire engine compartment harness and definitely have questions on what I need to keep. As suggested - large power wire, possibly the diagnostics port (for ABS codes?), and it appears the ABS computer wires. There are two ECU's in the passenger side computer compartment - DME...not sure about the other one.

    The new owner did come and transaction made. I gave him several extra items - M3 exhaust, DME, and few odds and ends. Both a winner as I didn't care to spend time cutting up the exhaust - depositing in the trash one piece at a time. Without a pickup, some simple actions are challenging. We'd actually met during local autocrosses a few years ago so...
